Description
James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1 Papers of James Buchanan, Series 5 contains ephemera from his personal life and political career. The materials in this collection range from 1833 to 1860.
The materials include invitations to different events and dinners, a facsimile of his petition for membership in Lodge No. 43, Free and Accepted Masons in Lancaster, a list of guests invited to a dinner in St. Petersburg in Russia during Buchanan's time as the ambassador, admission tickets, menus for dinners, bills of fare, and embossed valentines. Some of the organizations mentioned were the Royal Panopticon of Science and Art, Seamen's Hospital Society, the Royal Astronomical Society Club, the Democratic Citizens of the City of Philadelphia, and the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers, and Commerce.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old. [https://www.lancasterhistory.org/about-wheatland, accessed 10/24/2019]

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 2 Harriet Lane Johnston, Series 3 contains ephemera. This small collection of ephemera contains invitations both to and from Harriet Lane, her calling cards, a blank invitation, envelopes, and an acceptance of an invitation from Harriet Lane to Sir Edmund [Prideaux].
Admin/Biographical History
Born on May 9, 1830, Harriet Lane was the youngest surviving child of Elliot Toll Lane and Jane Buchanan Lane. When both of her parents died of consumption, now known as tuberculosis, Harriet went on to be her Uncle James Buchanan's ward in 1841. A well-educated lady, Harriet attended several boarding schools before graduating from the Georgetown Academy of Visitation Convent at the age of 18. When James Buchanan served as the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, Harriet Lane joined him for a time and served as a hostess. During her time in England, which she noted as "the realization of a beautiful dream," she befriended none other than Queen Victoria. When her Uncle assumed the presidency, Harriet Lane assumed her role as hostess. She is considered the first First Lady, as the title had initially been given to the president's hostess during Harriet's time in Washington.
After Buchanan's presidency, Harriet Lane married Henry Elliot Johnston, a banker from Baltimore, on January 11, 1866. She was 35 years old. The couple went on to have two sons, both of whom would pass away from rheumatic fever in their early teenage years. Two years after losing her youngest son, Harriet lost her husband to pneumonia. By 1884, Harriet was a childless widow. She would go on to leave a legacy for generations to come, including establishing a children's hospital in Baltimore called The Harriet Lane Home for Invalid Children (today the Harriet Lane Clinic at the John's Hopkins Children's Hospital), preserving her Uncle's letters and manuscripts, bestowing her art collection to the Corcoran Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and constructing the St. Alban's School, a school for choir boys. James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 4 Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Series 3 contains the ephemera and official documents of Edward Young Buchanan. This series includes diplomas, a letter awarding Induction into the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College, various pastoral records, and a photocopy of a student booklist with a poem by Elizabeth Buchanan. The dates range from 1832 to 1891.
Admin/Biographical History
Reverend Edward Young Buchanan (1811-1895) was born on May 30, 1811 in Mercersburg in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the child of James Buchanan (1761-1821) and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan (1767-1833). He was the younger brother of President James Buchanan (1791-1868). He went to college at Dickinson College. He later became a reverend.
In 1833, he married Anne Eliza Foster Buchanan (1812-1891), and together they had six children: Ann Elizabeth (1838-1927), Harriet (1841-1912), Henrietta Jane (1844-1906), Marie Lois (1847-1920), William Foster (1849-1875), and Alice Conyngham (1852-1931).
Rev. Edward Young Buchanan died on January 25, 1895.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane lamenting not seeing the Nevin girls, but had seen their parents, also lamenting the leaving of the new maid, agreeing that Bob’s attention to her was a way to see “her fair cousin,” a union which would “gratify the pride of Annie and her father,” comparing the elaborate consecration of a new bishop to the choosing of the first apostles, wishing that Lily had dropped by before leaving for Europe, wishing that when he called upon Miss. R. she “had flown,” advising to keep secret her visit to Baltimore less the “public papers” learn of it, asking if Charles Macalester had joined the Union League, expressing happiness that Jessie has visited her father, especially of Maria’s account, and urging her to visit Willoughby Webb to sign the request of the wishes of the majority of the heirs not to sell the property below appraisal value. Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston hoping she is having as much fun in Havana “as a good Episcopalian should”; noting that Kitty and Ellen are sick; stating that Annie and Harriet have left on “good footing”; having not seen any of the Nevins except Wilberforce; stating that the only daughter of Ohio Senator Allen dropped by with her husband, Dr. Scott; noting that good servants are hard to find and keep, but he likes Lizzie and hopes she will stay; commenting that Mrs. Norris could find no house in Lancaster she liked and has returned to Philadelphia (though he could have sold her the Lane house for $15,000 or $16,000); having called on Mrs. Jenkins where he met the President of the Patriot Daughters, adding that Mrs. Jenkins was sorry not to have attended Harriet’s wedding, but said little about Mrs. Lane, but that Mrs. Jenkins might have come if she had known that Harriet [Old] and Jane Slaymaker were there; enclosing a note (which came to him open) from Mrs. E. F. Etter, “who is a lady known to Miss Ann W. Stephens” and that at present he is “sequestered” with her. Embossed envelope addressed to Miss Harriet Lane. Letter from James Buchanan to Henry E. Johnston noting that he had a pleasant visit to brother Edward’s family and is happy that mother and son are doing well; reporting of seeing Mr. Macalester (a member of the Union League and a “violent” Republican, though he gave a dinner for Mr. Peabody along with John W. Forney in attendance, and happy that even though Macalester voted for Geary that his son voted for Clymer, and a note about Lily and Harriet; repeating the rumor that Harriet Buchanan and Bob Rogers will be married; having not seen the Nevins; begging off from visiting during the winter but hopes to come in warmer weather; asking that Harriet be informed of all the good wishes from her friends; and that Judge Cadwalder gave him a dinner with General Meade in attendance. Printed version of the will of James Buchanan directing that his body be interred in the Woodward Hill Cemetery; that all debts (“which are small”) be paid out of the estate; that the furnishings of the house be divided among Harriet L. Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan and J. Buchanan Henry, with the provision that Esther Parker be given $200 worth of the articles; bequeaths his wearing apparel, gold watch, watch chain and seals to Edward Y. Buchanan; bequeaths $5000 to Esther Parker; bequeaths his two certificates of loan, Nos. 43 and 43 or the sum of $2,000 if the certificates have been disposed of “for the use of poor and indigent females of the city” to be added to the $4,000 already provided; bequeaths $1,000 to the Presbyterian church in Lancaster of which he is a member; directs that all the real estate he owns be sold; directs that the proceeds from the sale of real estate, rents, etc., be distributed as described to his relatives: Harriet Lane Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan, J. Buchanan Henry, John B. Lane, James B. Lane, Elliott E. Lane; Mary E. Dunham, Maria B. Weaver, Jessie Magaw, James B. Weaver, John Bliss Weaver and Maria Magaw. Codicils bequeath sums of money to Martha J. Lane, William B. Reed (to write his biography), his wife, Mary L. Reed; domestics Peter Hillyer, Mary Smithgall, Lizzie Stoner; and finally, bequeaths the dwelling at Wheatland and all its land of 22 acres to Harriet Lane Johnston. Lancaster. James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1 Papers of James Buchanan, Series 3 Campaign and Inaugural Materials
Description
The James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Series 3 contains documents and ephemera from Buchanan's Presidential campaign, inauguration, and inaugural ball. The items date between 1833 and 1869.
Subseries 1 includes ephemera from the 1856 Presidential campaign and Subseries 2 has ephemera from Buchanan's inauguration and inaugural balls. The materials from James Buchanan's Presidential campaign include portraits of the candidates of the election of 1856, various political cartoons, a Democratic ticket from Virginia with engravings featuring Buchanan, a booklet, the results from the 1856 election, a handout promoting the Democratic ticket, and a song written about the life of James Buchanan set to the Democratic tune of "Poor Old Horse let him die." The inauguration materials include multiple invitations to the Grand National Inauguration Ball, Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper articles and illustrations of certain Inauguration scenes.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old. [https://www.lancasterhistory.org/about-wheatland, accessed 10/24/2019]

This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 3 Papers of James Buchanan Henry, Series 3 contains ephemera. The materials include a complementary ticket from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, calling cards, newspaper clippings, invitations to various events and weddings, a handwritten note from James Buchanan Henry, a business card of John Book, and a dinner menu of the Watch Hill House. The dates range from 1855 to 1907.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan Henry, also known as Buck, was born on March 1, 1833. Just like his cousin, Harriet, Buck lost both of his parents and was taken in as James Buchanan's ward in 1840. During his early years, he attended several boarding schools and eventually graduated from the College of New Jersey. Though his interests remained with the arts, Buck went on to read law under an attorney named John Cadwalader. When James Buchanan assumed the presidency, he called for Buck to join him as his private secretary, a position known today as the Chief of Staff. While Buck worked at Washington, he found himself in frequent conflict with his Uncle. This conflict came to a head in 1858 when Buck proposed to his sweetheart, Mary Nicholson. Upset that Buck hadn't consulted him on the proposal, James Buchanan disapproved of the match. Buck left his position as private secretary and went on to marry Miss Nicholson. The couple would have two children, one of whom would survive into adulthood.
Soon after the birth of their second child, Mary Nicholson died of consumption, leaving Buck a widower. Later on, he married Louisa Anderson, and the two had six sons. After fourteen years of marriage, Louisa died. Buck would marry for a third time much later in his life to a woman named Margaret Grote Elliman. Buck was 71 and Margaret was 24.
