Admin/Biographical History
Reverend Edward Young Buchanan (1811-1895) was born on May 30, 1811 in Mercersburg in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the child of James Buchanan (1761-1821) and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan (1767-1833). He was the younger brother of President James Buchanan (1791-1868). He went to college at Dickinson College. He later became a reverend.
In 1833, he married Anne Eliza Foster Buchanan (1812-1891), and together they had six children: Ann Elizabeth (1838-1927), Harriet (1841-1912), Henrietta Jane (1844-1906), Marie Lois (1847-1920), William Foster (1849-1875), and Alice Conyngham (1852-1931).
Rev. Edward Young Buchanan died on January 25, 1895.

Description
The James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Papers of James Buchanan, Series 2 contains the financial and legal documents of James Buchanan, including invoices and receipts, ledgers, accounts, deeds and land records, and estate papers, dated 1812-1883. Among these papers are financial papers including bank statements and memorandums; documents related to land in Clarion, PA; legal papers for the settlement of the Boyd estate and other properties; summaries of three cases decided by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania; a summary for the cost of a dinner in Russia in 1833; estate papers for family members and James Buchanan's will. Amos Slaymaker, Henry F. Slaymaker, Hiram B. Swarr, Edward Young Buchanan, Harriet Lane Johnston, and Henry E. Johnston are among the names found in these records.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old. [https://www.lancasterhistory.org/about-wheatland, accessed 10/24/2019]

Description
James Buchanan Family Papers Part 4, Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Series 1 contains the correspondence of Edward Young Buchanan from 1865 to 1883 and is divided into two subseries.
Edward, James Buchanan's brother, was co-executor of his brother's estate. The letters in this collection pertain mostly to the settlement of James Buchanan's estate, including the President's papers, biography, and memorial site. There are references to many nieces and nephews, especially Harriet Lane Johnston. Many of the letters from Edward are to James Buchanan's co-executor, Hiram B. Swarr. The letters to Edward are from William B. Reed, Charles M. Howell, and John Cadwalader.

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 4 Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Series 3 contains the ephemera and official documents of Edward Young Buchanan. This series includes diplomas, a letter awarding Induction into the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College, various pastoral records, and a photocopy of a student booklist with a poem by Elizabeth Buchanan. The dates range from 1832 to 1891.

Printed version of the court case between the executors of James Buchanan’s estate and Henry E. Johnston and Harriet L. Johnston, his wife, concerning the papers left by Buchanan, some delivered to William B. Reed for the purpose of writing a biography (as directed by the will, but Reed refused to write the biography), the alleged mis-handling by E. Y. Buchanan of a large number of family papers in the possession of the defendants, and the unwillingness of E. Y. Buchanan to destroy certain papers as directed by the will. Lancaster.

Swarr noting that he has received a proposal to write the biography of James Buchanan from Mr. Shunk, who would be under the influence of Judge Black and his partially false opinions about the end of Buchanan’s administration; wondering about Mrs. Johnston’s views of Mr. Reed or the book; hoping that Mrs. Johnston has received her interest on her trust funds and is satisfied with them; noting that funds for John Weaver’s school will soon be due and suggesting that these funds and those for the Lane boys be legally invested; and noting that Mr. Reed’s property on Chestnut Hill is advertised at sheriff’s sale in the Daily Age. Swarr regretting that the weather prevented him from coming to Lancaster to attend the funeral of Mr. Wharton; hoping that the matter of the mortgage has been straightened out with Mr. McMurtrie and the purchaser; returning receipts for money received on behalf of John Weaver and Mr. Johnston’s letter; replying at length to Mr. Johnston’s objections about the housing of James Buchanan’s papers; advising no reference to Judge Black’s alleged opinion on the value of the papers; advising no reply to Mr. Johnston’s request for suggestions for the author of James Buchanan’s biography, except in noting that Mr. Shunk is unacceptable; advising warning that funds might need to be withheld from the estate if Mr. Johnston keeps threatening legal action; raising the suggestion that presidential papers now at Wheatland be removed to Mr. Swarr’s home; and asking that his name not be mentioned in his reply to Mr. Johnston.
