Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Lane, Esq. praising his appraising of some matting and for acting wisely in not buying Buchanan’s house at this time because of taking too much capital, but Buchanan will not offer it for sale publicly. Written on the blank page is James B. Lane’s reply stating that he does not wish to board but will do so until circumstances improve. He will inform Mr. Meredith that all he wants from the furniture at Wheatland is the matting. On the same stationery is a copy of James Lane’s reply from Lancaster, stating that he wants to exchange housekeeping for a property of his own and that Mr. Fortney wishes Buchanan to inform Mr. Meredith that he will not want any furniture from Wheatland except the matting. She praises a concert given by pianist [Maurice] Strakosch and Miss Northall and urges him to purchase a piano like it. She advises him to direct his letters to the Marine Pavilion Rockaway to differentiate it from the town of Rockaway on Long Island. Signed Harriette L. Marine Pavilion [Hotel], Far Rockaway, Queens, New York City.

Letter from Harriet Lane Johnston to Mary Speer containing family gossip including the health of Mary’s father, the white pudding (which Henry Morris tried and failed to like, as did Harriet’s family); [son] Harry is out all day in the goat wagon and never feels tired and she hopes great improvement to report when Da Costa comes; Chand Black just left; futile attempts to send cherries to Mary, Bessie, and Carrie; son Harry is saving material of the assassinated President [Garfield]; inviting them to Wheatland with Mr. Speer as well. With envelope addressed to Miss Mary C. Speer, 1st National Bank, Pittsburgh, Pa. with 3 postmarks and stamp.

Letter from J. B. Henry to Louisa Anderson remembering fondly the family’s seeing him off; describes several of the passengers including ex-priest Grazzi, Rev. Mr. Murray, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Osborne and mentions Frank Buchanan, his traveling companion; describes his sightings along the North American coast, the extreme heat aboard; the careful crew watching for icebergs; misses his family greatly; gets cold at the Great Banks; is not impressed with the passengers, especially the women and their “sea chairs”; outlines travel plans in Scotland; mentions great fog; and asks how Roger is doing. Envelope with two 2-pence stamps and no postmark addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, Garden City, Long Island, New York, U.S. Steamship Saythia, 1200 miles from New York.
