Title: City of Lancaster Records

Description: Series 1 contains invoices, arrest warrants, and tax collector books for the city of Lancaster. Invoices that were approved by the city council in 1878, 1883 and 1884 for payroll and supplies include road and bridge maintenance, water works, fire departments, clerk and inspection work, and costs incurred by the city during an outbreak of small pox. Arrest warrants for 1918-1919 show names of defendant(s) and police officer, the charge, date and case number. There are also tax collector records for 1860-1889, incomplete.; Series 2 contains documents regarding the market houses, waterworks, lamps, roads, railroad and city ordinances. Petitions support a candidate for night watchman, seek to repeal an ordinance for hanging signs and regulations for public scales, and request a reward for the apprehension of a murderer. There is an 1815 naturalization certificate for James Williams and a resolution regarding a visit of Gen. Andrew Jackson.; Series 3 contains miscellaneous items related to the Borough of Lancaster (1742 to 1818) found in the Document Collection. Items include an act regulating the buildings and keeping in repair the streets, lanes, and alley of Lancaster, passed 14 January 1774; oaths of office sworn by various men from 1764 to 1769; and an extract of Lancaster Borough laws enacted 22 January 1774 reporting the regulations and fines of this borough.

Title: Andrew B. Rote Collection

Description: The Andrew B. Rote Collection contains the business records of C. V. Rote & Co., which later became A. B. Rote & Co., and some family records. The Lancaster company specialized in awnings and ironwork. Deeds, mortgages, and other property records are for property owned by the Rotes and used for their business. The record books of the company, 1881-1942, show accounting, clients, cash flow, bids, and inventory. A catalog of architectural bronze and iron works illustrates their products. There are also stock certificates for a number of local and regional businesses such as Farmers Trust Company, Union Trust Company, and Meadia Heights Golf Club.

Admin/Biographical History: C. V. Rote & Company was founded by Charles V. Rote, Jacob F. Bender, and John W. Holman on 3 March 1881, specifically for the manufacture of awnings. Bender and Holman provided the financing, space for the shop, the time they could commit, and the use of their horse and buggy. Rote committed his labor and time in manufacturing the awnings. Their initial success continued when they added architectural bronze and iron work. Andrew B. Rote took over the business in 1894, which was then located at 111-117 E. Chestnut Street, Lancaster.

Description: This sterling silver coffeepot has a hinged angular and oblong shaped lid with a finial top surmounting a flaired angular neck adorned with a Greek key above a bulging torso. The spout is square with a goose neck shape and flat opening. The pot handle is angular and square with ribbed band decor. The pedstal style base is supported by four ball feet.; See B.R. Notes: Although produced in England, the Staffordshired china shown depicts the New Jersey residence of the late Richard Jordan, a Quaker preacher in Newton, Burlington Country (near Camden).; Born in 1756, Jordan was one of the first Quakers to publicly campaign against the holding of slaves. After traveling extensively on the east coast and in Europe, he published a travel journal that gave him a degree of fame in the eastern United States.; In 1809 Jordan joined the Newton, New Jersey Quaker Meeting and settled on a small farm in what is now Camden, where he died in 1826. During the last year of his life, Jordan was sketched standing in front of his farm by this friend, William Mason, a Philadelphia drawing teacher. The china service was ordered by friends of the preacher after his death.

Description: Mochaware pitcher, white potbelly body on footring, pulled spout and applied handle with foliate-molded terminals. Hand-painted slip decoration has broad orange center band with dendritic forms. Two bands of ligt blue are flanked by pairs of thin brown bands; Two attached stickers read "Mocha 1 P" and "2352 J.B. Morris Jr.".

Description: Glazed soft paste porcelain Gaudy Dutch teapot (A) with lid (B). Handpainted "Butterfly" pattern decoration on pale blue body of pearlware. Squat ovoid body sits on a low footring; body swells most in lower half. Collar extends outward below an oblong mouth fitted with conforming domed lid with oblong knob finial . Spout has minimal molding as does arching applied handle.

Condition Notes: Overall strong staining, especially at lower spout and base section and interior. Strong hairline cracks throughout base and bottom, with resulting staining. Scratchon butterfly wing. Chip on underside of spout tip. Long split/crack on handle back, perhaps from firing. Coloring is very uneven at multiple places, sometimes creating a mottled effect. Wear and soil under foot ring.
