Henry saying she will send her letters; her father is better but Aunt Sidney is about the same; laments her station to be around depressed people, but she and Frank are trying to be cheerful; Frank’s practice is busy but not very lucrative; Mrs. Greenfield visits daily but is going to Lake George; the Misses Rhind drop by; Miss Kellogg is teaching the children manners, but Willie is reluctant to learn; is hiring a new girl for the month on Mrs. Mackenzie’s recommendation; send two letters and the article, all recommend should not be published; Frank has enough patients but their medical problems are routine; and sends love to Dody. Henry expressing sorrow over Mrs. Magruder’s accident; Louisa is gaining strength and the baby [William] is doing well; Mrs. Pennelt paid a visit; Elizabeth is not good at finding a nurse because she sent a 19-year-old girl from another country who had been with Mrs. Outerbridge; doesn’t want to hire a woman who will leave after a brief time; asks him to find a woman in Annapolis and she wouldn’t mind “a nice looking light-colored woman” but not “a great big black woman.” Envelope edged in black with postmark addressed to James Buchanan Henry, Esq. Hotel Maryland, Annapolis, Maryland extremely faded. Stapleton. [11/12/1873] Date from envelope, context and perpetual calendar.

Henry reporting that he spent some time with Uncle Frank on the Alabama shortly before it sailed; comments on Joe’s being mustered out of service; wonders if Lal has heard; says much is happening on the exchange; Will was there for a couple of days; Jessie Grange is engaged to Waller (a former member of the Maryland legislature), who deserves her; Elise will probably be next; and the pin from Tiffany’s arrived and has been cleaned “first rate.” [11/1902] Date from context.

Henry to Louisa Anderson expressing sorrow that she is sick and hopes she can produce enough milk for the their son; thinks he will look like her when a little older; upset that he has to leave for Currituck a day before the amateur theatrical in which “Mr. Randall & Mr. McIlvain & possibly Randy Hagner” will take part; Miss Susie wrote a nice letter and will with others spend a few days; frustrated that a nurse for the baby is so hard to find, his preferring an Annapolis woman to a Staten Island woman because the latter might get “house sick”; Miss Daly might be able to help; happy that she has heard from Cousin Annie, Harriet, and Alice; fears the economic conditions will get worse and the poor will suffer greatly; his business partner, Mr. Parker, is very gloomy about the future; ends on a melancholy note.
