Swarr after visiting Bedford Springs remarking that the only old Whig of consequence to abandon the party was Hiester; noting that the appointment of Mr. Schroeder (a true Democrat popular among the Germans) as postmaster was as much Swarr’s doing as his, refusing to appoint Chandler as Minister to Rome in spite of all the Catholic bishops and sending him to Naples instead, and refusing to appoint Schroeder as a register or receiver of a land office. Private and confidential letter from James Buchanan to John Black of the U.S. Department of State. Buchanan thanks Mr. Black for all of his hard work and informs him he is sending this letter with an important dispatch he had sent to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Mexico. He also informs Mr. Black that Colonel A. J. Atocha will be delivering these things to him, and if asked he should give any advice regarding Mexico to Colonel Atocha. Washington, D.C. 19 January 1847.
