Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons. Swarr asking that Mr. Russell pay the principal of his bond if at all possible, and if not, asking if he could borrow money from the estate for his forthcoming trip abroad, promising to pay 6 percent on money for which they are now getting 4 percent; noting that Mr. Henry is coming this week; noting that his son William has sailed in the Saranak for Paris via Liverpool; and wondering whether the estate is responsible to the heirs for money actually earned, whether it be 6 percent or 4 percent. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr informing him that Judge Black had asked to meet with James Buchanan Henry and himself, but that he could not because Mr. Henry had left and because he is opposed to Judge Black’s appointment as James Buchanan’s biographer, because he disapproves of Judge Black’s letter to the New York Herald in January 1870. This letter concerned the “consternation & grief” which the Cabinet felt on hearing James Buchanan’s response to the South Carolina Commissioners. In fact the changes in President Buchanan’s “views and proceedings” were caused by the secessionists in Charleston. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

Swarr, his first since leaving America in the autumn, describing their travels, the Carnival in Rome, not seeing the Pope, but catching a glimpse of Victor Emmanuel, all in crowds of tourists from America and England; reporting that his son William became ill in Paris and will come for rest in Italy; noting that John Lane must have reached his majority and received his inheritance; expressing satisfaction that the Foltz case was settled favorably; and asking for new information to be sent to him in London on whether Judge Black intends to write a history of James Buchanan’s presidency; and sending good wishes to Mrs. Swarr, Mrs. Kremer, Miss Mary, Charles, Mr. Swift, and Miss Hetty.
