Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. The James Buchanan Collection, 1816-present, contains material that pertains to the life and legacy of James Buchanan and his Lancaster home, Wheatland. The collection includes correspondence of James Buchanan and letters written by his niece, Harriet Lane Johnston. Newspaper articles discuss Buchanan's life and Wheatland, tell the story of Buchanan's romance with Ann Coleman, and report on commemorative events. Legal and personal business are represented by deeds, financial matters, and Buchanan's probate records.
Political papers include the Presidential appointment of Buchanan as Minister to Russia, certification to represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate, and a series of letters regarding the Atlantic slave trade in 1819 and Liberia in 1858. In letters, Buchanan outlined his reasons for not wanting to run for Governor, wrote about the confidence bestowed on him by the Democratic Party, and established a fund for the city of Lancaster to purchase wood and coal for poor women during the winter. After the Crimean War, Buchanan wrote to the ambassador to the United Kingdom and observed that Russia seemed to be intent on recovering its military prestige and had made vast naval preparations.
There is an assortment of ephemera, such as programs for memorial celebrations, material related to John Updike's play Buchanan Dying, commemorative stamps, sheet music, and invitations. Souvenir pamphlets from Wheatland provide history about Buchanan's home and the museum. Speeches range from those given by Buchanan to several that honor his life and Presidency. A scrapbook describes the establishment of Wheatland as a museum and contains newspaper articles about archaeology on the site in 1948.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. He died in his bedchamber at Wheatland at 8:30 AM on June 1, 1868. He was 77 years old.

The James Buchanan Family Papers Part 2, Harriet Lane Johnston, Series 4 contains the papers of her husband, Henry Elliot Johnston. The series is divided into four subseries, including correspondence, financial documents, legal documents, and ephemera. The correspondence includes letters sent by Henry Elliot Johnston to H. B. Swarr from 1867-1873 regarding the distribution from President Buchanan's estate and letters from Isaac Hiester and George Ticknor Curtis. The financial and legal documents include the sale of land, cemetery arrangements, the disposition of presidential papers including those held by E. Y. Buchanan, the choice of President Buchanan's biographer, and legal papers regarding bequests to Mary C. Speer and Louise Speer.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane stating that he opened her letter from Mrs. Kennedy and read the part dealing with John Lane’s estate; hoping that Mr. Riddle visits Lancaster when she is there; saying that a case has been argued in Harrisburg with no decision yet; expressing sorrow at the illness of James Henry’s wife; reporting that Bob Nevin visited last night and that he had his hand on General Whipple’s shoulder when he was mortally wounded and is taking the body to New Hampshire; expressing disappointment that no welcoming was planned for the 122nd Regiment; hoping the political parties may not “have a collision,” and having no further information about the Lanes except that Dick’s house is not yet finished. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston discussing plans for the summer for her family and him; saying that at 76 years of age, he preferred to stay home; expressing happiness that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms, but the boys are too old for him to control; looking forward to the visit of Mr. Schell on his birthday; lamenting the fact that he has “neither waiting nor cook” but that Lizzie is a tolerable cook; admitting that Peter’s participation in a “Negro riot at the door of the Negro church and is eluding the police”; reporting that Dr. Carpenter was not hurt very much but is hoping to become Collector of Internal Revenue; saying that Miss Hetty is better and will “be on a crutch” soon; saying that the Swarrs reported that Emily Baker will not be married until fall and that Mr. Baker, usually very talkative, has said nothing on the subject but has added A. Griffeth as a partner; reporting that Captain Magaw has a good command now; reporting sadly that Willie has the consumption and his sisters are nursing him; and saw Mrs. Forney at Mrs. Porter’s funeral and that the Nevins had visited her. Description
Transcriptions of several pieces of correspondence to Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt from a number of individuals, including: A. J. Cassatt; her sisters, Anne Buchanan, Alice Buchanan and Henrietta Buchanan; her mother, Anne Foster Buchanan; her brother, Henry Buchanan; her cousin, Harriet Lane Johnston; and her father, Edward Y. Buchanan. All the correspondence is to Mary while she was visiting her cousin, Harriet Johnston, in Baltimore. Mary's stay was extended when Harriet left to see to James Buchanan at Wheatland in his last days before his death and Mary stayed with Harriet’s son. Some of the originals of Harriet’s letters are in Part 2 of this collection. Lancaster, PA; Altoona, PA; Oxford Parsonage, PA; Philadelphia, PA. 23 March 1868 through June 12, 1868.
