This report presents the case for the preservation of the architectural and environmental aspects of this heritage in a balanced, planned relationship with continued contemporary development. Information is offered concerning the County's resources, the dangers to historic areas, and the possibilities for action. While individual County landmarks do deserve additional attention, the primary emphasis within this report is on the overall character of Lancaster's environmental heritage and the need for its preservation. The natural beauty of our rural areas and the pervasive historic character of many of our older communities are among Lancaster County's basic assets.
This study was updated in 1985 by the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. The update's title is "Our present past: An update of Lancaster's Heritage" and can be found in our collection. The author of the update is "Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County".

Summary
Book provides reader with a short biography of Urban. A brief description of the red brick architectural appearance of Lancaster up to 1880s. Urban's designs changed the colonial appearance of Lancaster because he had access to modern technology: structural steel, cast iron, plate glass which allowed him to design taller buildings with larger windows. Book identifies as Urban's designs: one market; one municipal building; two churches; three schools; four mansions (including Urban's home on Buchanan Ave). Each structure is identified with a description, location and year built; picture of structure; brief biography of person for whom building was named. Summary
This article concerns a house built in 1790 by Martin Barr in Quarryville, PA. "...the old structure to which I ask your brief attention commands interest and has the charm of novelty. Situated in the northern end of the borough of Quarryville, perched on a slight hill, stands a large stone building, known for many years as 'The Ark', and the hill on which it stands as 'Mount Ararat.' These names, it is said, were given by a noted wag of his day, named Longenecker, soon after the house was built."

"Between 140-150 N Church Street, Quarryville, PA 17566. The Ark is an old stone building that remains one of the most intriguing structures in the Southern End of Lancaster County. This mansion, erected in 1791 by Martin Barr, was one of several buildings that he built around that time period and still stands today on Mount Ararat. The house was centrally located on the property owned by Martin Barr at the time. The structure was made mostly of strong walnut wood; the walls were twenty-four inches thick and a hallway twelve feet wide! The Ark was in existence before Quarryville came to be and the area was instead known as Barrs Quarries until 1833. Abram Barr inherited the Ark after Martin Barr passed away. Many years later after the grandchildren of Martin Barr died off the estate was divided and sold. The Ark was bought and became Hotel Quarryville."
