Description
The James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Series 3 contains documents and ephemera from Buchanan's Presidential campaign, inauguration, and inaugural ball. The items date between 1833 and 1869.
Subseries 1 includes ephemera from the 1856 Presidential campaign and Subseries 2 has ephemera from Buchanan's inauguration and inaugural balls. The materials from James Buchanan's Presidential campaign include portraits of the candidates of the election of 1856, various political cartoons, a Democratic ticket from Virginia with engravings featuring Buchanan, a booklet, the results from the 1856 election, a handout promoting the Democratic ticket, and a song written about the life of James Buchanan set to the Democratic tune of "Poor Old Horse let him die." The inauguration materials include multiple invitations to the Grand National Inauguration Ball, Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper articles and illustrations of certain Inauguration scenes.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. Description
James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Papers of James Buchanan, Series 6 is arranged into three subseries of miscellaneous materials.
Subseries 1 is sheet music dedicated to James Buchanan, including the Wheatland Polka, The Schottisch, and Buchanan's Union Grand March.
Subseries 2 is published and print materials, including newspaper cartoons and illustrations, pamphlets for the 1824 election of John Quincy Adams, a tourist card, and meeting minutes.
Subseries 3 includes government documents, an act to alter and amend the several acts imposing tariffs, commercial treaties, supplementary acts, a document signed by Secretary of State William L. Marcy, a passport signed by James Buchanan, land grants, and other government documents, including some in French, Spanish, English, and German.

Strong’s Dime Caricatures No. 2 showing the Union as Little Bo Peep, Old Hickory as a dead dog, Old Buck as a live dog but running from the action as imperial wolves pick off the seceding states except Virginia and Kansas. Stamped on the right margin are the date Apr. 15, 1861 in blue ink; Deposited in U. S. District Clerk’s Office Southern District of New York in an oval; and written below the oval Feb. 28, 1861, below which are apparently vender’s markings. Pasted on heavy board. T. W. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr detailing financial affairs. He has placed their bonds and Miss Hetty’s in the Safety Deposit Building in Philadelphia and the certificates in the Farmers & Mechanics Bank. A new Power of Attorney is required for Lehigh Valley Railroad to continue to issue dividends to the Misses Pleasanton, although he would prefer that a new Trustee be appointed to whom their securities could be transferred. He will prepare the letter to Mr. Demund soon. He has asked Mr. Johnston to bid on the sleigh with a $50.00 limit; and asks that someone be at Mr. Trout’s to receive things as they arrive. Gollden envelope with stamp but no postmark addressed to H. B. Swarr, Esq., Lancaster, Pa. On front of envelope: Edward Y.
