Letter from Harriet Lane Johnston to Mary Speer containing family gossip including the health of Mary’s father, the white pudding (which Henry Morris tried and failed to like, as did Harriet’s family); [son] Harry is out all day in the goat wagon and never feels tired and she hopes great improvement to report when Da Costa comes; Chand Black just left; futile attempts to send cherries to Mary, Bessie, and Carrie; son Harry is saving material of the assassinated President [Garfield]; inviting them to Wheatland with Mr. Speer as well. With envelope addressed to Miss Mary C. Speer, 1st National Bank, Pittsburgh, Pa. with 3 postmarks and stamp.

Dr. Buchanan, who has unpacked 18 of them and not yet found the paper giving the conversation between President Buchanan and Col. Benton. Description
Letter to Henry E. Johnston from George Ticknor Curtis stating that he was unable to include an engraving of Mrs. Johnston (or Miss Lane as she then was) in the first volume of Buchanan’s biography for various reasons. The book will be illustrated by two engravings of Buchanan, one by Sartain and another by Buttré, and by a woodcut of Wheatland. Typed on onion-skin paper with manuscript note at end. New York.

Transcription of letter from Thaddeus Stevens to Col. Blanchard stating that he had to return to Pennsylvania for business and regretted that he was not able to meet with the Juvenile Society.
