James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 2 Papers of Harriet Lane Johnston, Series 1 contains the correspondence of Harriet Lane Johnston.
Subseries 1 contains letters written by Harriet to James Buchanan, Lily Macalester and Charles Macalester, Lois Buchanan, Hiram B. Swarr, Mary Speer, and others from 1848-1902.
Subseries 2 contains letters written to Harriet from Captain W. R. Palmer, Alfred Pleasanton, Laura Pleasanton, Isaac E. Hiester and others from 1854 to 1897, including several describing Washington, D.C. in 1861.
Admin/Biographical History
Born on May 9, 1830, Harriet Lane was the youngest surviving child of Elliot Toll Lane and Jane Buchanan Lane. When both of her parents died of consumption, now known as tuberculosis, Harriet went on to be her Uncle James Buchanan's ward in 1841. A well-educated lady, Harriet attended several boarding schools before graduating from the Georgetown Academy of Visitation Convent at the age of 18. When James Buchanan served as the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, Harriet Lane joined him for a time and served as a hostess. During her time in England, which she noted as "the realization of a beautiful dream," she befriended none other than Queen Victoria. When her Uncle assumed the presidency, Harriet Lane assumed her role as hostess. She is considered the first First Lady, as the title had initially been given to the president's hostess during Harriet's time in Washington.
After Buchanan's presidency, Harriet Lane married Henry Elliot Johnston, a banker from Baltimore, on January 11, 1866. She was 35 years old. The couple went on to have two sons, both of whom would pass away from rheumatic fever in their early teenage years. Two years after losing her youngest son, Harriet lost her husband to pneumonia. By 1884, Harriet was a childless widow. She would go on to leave a legacy for generations to come, including establishing a children's hospital in Baltimore called The Harriet Lane Home for Invalid Children (today the Harriet Lane Clinic at the John's Hopkins Children's Hospital), preserving her Uncle's letters and manuscripts, bestowing her art collection to the Corcoran Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and constructing the St. Alban's School, a school for choir boys. Herr since someone in Baltimore has an interest in him, giving him high praise; regretting to tell her Willie “doubtless” has consumption and that since Annie cannot come, he might write Maria Weaver; reporting that he has visited the Lanes but the boys have not visited him; happily saying that Mrs. Lane hosted “a dinner of gentlemen” for Mrs. Schell he sponsored but that Mrs. Lane will not marry McEvoy; gladly saying that Miss Hetty is up and about on crutches, that Lizzie is a good cook and Mary a tolerable waiter; wishing her a happy birthday and admonishes her not to follow the examples of Mrs. R. and Mrs. U.; and saying the Nevins always ask about her. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing joy at her joining the church and asking that the engraving she proposes to have framed be given to his brother Edward since James has no appropriate place to hang it; intending to have the two boxes of champagne sent from Michael’s warehouse today; stating that Miss Hetty, complaining of “violent dyspeptic symptoms,” will expose herself about the gardens and the grounds; and reporting that he has thanked Mr. Carlisle, in her name, for the photograph. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane stating that he opened her letter from Mrs. Kennedy and read the part dealing with John Lane’s estate; hoping that Mr. Riddle visits Lancaster when she is there; saying that a case has been argued in Harrisburg with no decision yet; expressing sorrow at the illness of James Henry’s wife; reporting that Bob Nevin visited last night and that he had his hand on General Whipple’s shoulder when he was mortally wounded and is taking the body to New Hampshire; expressing disappointment that no welcoming was planned for the 122nd Regiment; hoping the political parties may not “have a collision,” and having no further information about the Lanes except that Dick’s house is not yet finished. With envelope addressed in care of Frederick Brown, Esq., Philadelphia. Wheatland.

Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston discussing plans for the summer for her family and him; saying that at 76 years of age, he preferred to stay home; expressing happiness that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms, but the boys are too old for him to control; looking forward to the visit of Mr. Schell on his birthday; lamenting the fact that he has “neither waiting nor cook” but that Lizzie is a tolerable cook; admitting that Peter’s participation in a “Negro riot at the door of the Negro church and is eluding the police”; reporting that Dr. Carpenter was not hurt very much but is hoping to become Collector of Internal Revenue; saying that Miss Hetty is better and will “be on a crutch” soon; saying that the Swarrs reported that Emily Baker will not be married until fall and that Mr. Baker, usually very talkative, has said nothing on the subject but has added A. Griffeth as a partner; reporting that Captain Magaw has a good command now; reporting sadly that Willie has the consumption and his sisters are nursing him; and saw Mrs. Forney at Mrs. Porter’s funeral and that the Nevins had visited her. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.

Description
Transcriptions of several pieces of correspondence to Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt from a number of individuals, including: A. J. Cassatt; her sisters, Anne Buchanan, Alice Buchanan and Henrietta Buchanan; her mother, Anne Foster Buchanan; her brother, Henry Buchanan; her cousin, Harriet Lane Johnston; and her father, Edward Y. Buchanan. All the correspondence is to Mary while she was visiting her cousin, Harriet Johnston, in Baltimore. Mary's stay was extended when Harriet left to see to James Buchanan at Wheatland in his last days before his death and Mary stayed with Harriet’s son. Some of the originals of Harriet’s letters are in Part 2 of this collection. Lancaster, PA; Altoona, PA; Oxford Parsonage, PA; Philadelphia, PA. 23 March 1868 through June 12, 1868.
