This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston discussing plans for the summer for her family and him; saying that at 76 years of age, he preferred to stay home; expressing happiness that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms, but the boys are too old for him to control; looking forward to the visit of Mr. Schell on his birthday; lamenting the fact that he has “neither waiting nor cook” but that Lizzie is a tolerable cook; admitting that Peter’s participation in a “Negro riot at the door of the Negro church and is eluding the police”; reporting that Dr. Carpenter was not hurt very much but is hoping to become Collector of Internal Revenue; saying that Miss Hetty is better and will “be on a crutch” soon; saying that the Swarrs reported that Emily Baker will not be married until fall and that Mr. Baker, usually very talkative, has said nothing on the subject but has added A. Griffeth as a partner; reporting that Captain Magaw has a good command now; reporting sadly that Willie has the consumption and his sisters are nursing him; and saw Mrs. Forney at Mrs. Porter’s funeral and that the Nevins had visited her. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr detailing financial affairs. He has placed their bonds and Miss Hetty’s in the Safety Deposit Building in Philadelphia and the certificates in the Farmers & Mechanics Bank. A new Power of Attorney is required for Lehigh Valley Railroad to continue to issue dividends to the Misses Pleasanton, although he would prefer that a new Trustee be appointed to whom their securities could be transferred. He will prepare the letter to Mr. Demund soon. He has asked Mr. Johnston to bid on the sleigh with a $50.00 limit; and asks that someone be at Mr. Trout’s to receive things as they arrive.
