Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr enclosing the requested receipts; noting that the interest on Mr. Abram W. Russell’s mortgage should be paid in coin or its equivalent, rather than in currency; proposing that Mr. Swarr have Mr. Hiester write a second letter to Harriet Johnston setting a deadline for her reply regarding the papers, after which legal proceedings will begin. Swarr gratefully acknowledging receipt of the semi-annual interest on his Russell mortgages; wishing to discuss Mr. Wiley’s mortgage; noting that Miss Hetty and Mrs. Dunham are visiting and that Miss Hetty has informed him that the Johnstons are planning a trip to Montreal; requesting information on what the Johnstons are planning to do about the law suit; and noting how unseemly it appeared for African-American men to be voting alongside white men at the polls in Frankford that morning. Buchanan’s farm contains the superfluous word “on” and asking to have Mr. Smith correct it; asking him as a personal favor to contact Mr. Dripps regarding a late mortgage payment; noting that nothing has been received from Mr. Wise yet, except Mr. Monaghan has received $100 from him; worrying that Mr. Hiester may accept delays from Judge Black regarding the lawsuit, and that until the issue is settled they may as well not bother to hire a biographer because they could not furnish him with any papers other than those already in their possession; and noting that he has spoken to Mr. Cassatt again concerning Charles.
