Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Lane, Esq. praising his appraising of some matting and for acting wisely in not buying Buchanan’s house at this time because of taking too much capital, but Buchanan will not offer it for sale publicly. Written on the blank page is James B. Lane’s reply stating that he does not wish to board but will do so until circumstances improve. He will inform Mr. Meredith that all he wants from the furniture at Wheatland is the matting. On the same stationery is a copy of James Lane’s reply from Lancaster, stating that he wants to exchange housekeeping for a property of his own and that Mr. Fortney wishes Buchanan to inform Mr. Meredith that he will not want any furniture from Wheatland except the matting. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing joy at her joining the church and asking that the engraving she proposes to have framed be given to his brother Edward since James has no appropriate place to hang it; intending to have the two boxes of champagne sent from Michael’s warehouse today; stating that Miss Hetty, complaining of “violent dyspeptic symptoms,” will expose herself about the gardens and the grounds; and reporting that he has thanked Mr. Carlisle, in her name, for the photograph.
