Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester asking her pardon for not writing earlier; Mrs. Plitt still at Wheatland; Uncle well and calm as he awaits the outcome of the election today; wishing Lily had written more as a political writer; Robert Eden’s former dark red moustache; Eskridge getting along well using a crutch and cane; the toll that the campaign took on the family; in the election “right will prevail”; Emily Schaumburg’s staying with the Porters; Colonel Pleasonton’s engagement to a widow with many children and Addy’s reaction; and suggests that Lily’s father might follow the same example to give Lily some children to play with. Bookcase composed of two sections. Cabinet with glass doors at top and cabinet with wooden doors at bottom. Two glass doors have square mullions holding the panes. Doors give access to moveable shelves inside. Two doors at bottom of each have simple rectangular recessed panels.

Letter from James Buchanan to Eskridge Lane dealing with business matters; he will leave Hornby for Richmond Hill, the seat of William Brown, MP and partner in Brown, Shipley & Co; Harriet will stay there to be in the wedding of Brown’s grandson; the bride’s mother is a sister of James Coleman; and abusive articles supposedly from the “Government Organ at Washington” hampering his negotiations. Hornby Castle, Yorkshire.
