The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Letter from P. G. Shipley at Johns Hopkins Hospital to Mrs. A. K. Hostetter of Lancaster. The letter contains a copy of the inscriptions on the tombstones of Harriet Lane, her husband and her children. The letter also contains a rough sketch of Harriet Lane’s tombstone. Lancaster.

Kyd Douglas to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that business in court prevented his traveling to Mercersburg to see her dedicate a portrait of James Buchanan; and recalling once again the events of Buchanan’s inauguration. Envelope addressed to HLJ at 1739 “I” Street, Washington, DC; franking, postmark, and stamp from Hagerstown, wax seal on back with a second franking and postmark from Washington, D.C.
