Third and final audit of J. W. F. Swift of the distribution of the “balance in the hands of EYB and H. B. Swarr, executors of the estate of James Buchanan; after quoting the terms of the last will and testament of James Buchanan, the audit lists the expenses and distributing the remaining amount as follows: Harriet Lane Johnston $4643.76, John N. Lane $202.26, James B. Lane $202.26, Elliott E. Lane $202.26, John B. Weaver $151.69, EYB $782.45, James Buchanan Henry $613.57, Mary E. Dunham $306.77, James B. Weaver $76.69, Maria B. Weaver $76.69, and Jessie Magaw $76,69, Aggregate of contribution to biographical fund $1875.00, and aggregate if succession tax $108.39 for a grand total of $6314.69; and accounts for the bonds of the State of Tennessee; certified on 22 November 1873 by S. J. Kauffman, Deputy Clerk of Orphan’s Court.

James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 3 Papers of James Buchanan Henry, Series 1 contains the correspondence of James Buchanan Henry. Subseries 1 is letters written by James Buchanan Henry and Subseries 2 is letters received by James Buchanan Henry. The letters are primarily to and from family members and friends with family news, details of his travels, political and business matters, social engagements and responsibilities, and information about friends. Correspondents include Mary Hagner Nicholson Henry, Louisa Anderson Henry, his children, extended family members, William Uhler Hensel, Hiram B. Swarr, classmates, and friends. The dates range from 1850 to 1909.
Admin/Biographical History
James Buchanan Henry, also known as Buck, was born on March 1, 1833. Just like his cousin, Harriet, Buck lost both of his parents and was taken in as James Buchanan's ward in 1840. During his early years, he attended several boarding schools and eventually graduated from the College of New Jersey. Though his interests remained with the arts, Buck went on to read law under an attorney named John Cadwalader. When James Buchanan assumed the presidency, he called for Buck to join him as his private secretary, a position known today as the Chief of Staff. While Buck worked at Washington, he found himself in frequent conflict with his Uncle. This conflict came to a head in 1858 when Buck proposed to his sweetheart, Mary Nicholson. Upset that Buck hadn't consulted him on the proposal, James Buchanan disapproved of the match. Buck left his position as private secretary and went on to marry Miss Nicholson. The couple would have two children, one of whom would survive into adulthood.
Soon after the birth of their second child, Mary Nicholson died of consumption, leaving Buck a widower. Later on, he married Louisa Anderson, and the two had six sons. After fourteen years of marriage, Louisa died. Buck would marry for a third time much later in his life to a woman named Margaret Grote Elliman. Buck was 71 and Margaret was 24. James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 8 the Papers of Others (Not Part of the Family), Series 1 contains correspondence from various individuals who, although not familiarly related to James Buchanan, may be related through business, extended family relationships, and friends and guests of Wheatland.
Named recipients and authors include Joseph C. Passmore (1843), Virginia Pleasonton (1849), Ann Elizabeth Foster Buchanan (1850), George S. Bryan (1855); H. S. Gara (1855), George Steinman (1857), Morrison Foster (1859), D.G. Eshleman (1860), Hiram B. Swarr (1860), H. M. North (1860), William E. Cooper (1861, 1862, 1864, 1866, 1888), Harry N. Howell (1862), P. S. Dechert (1862, 1864), George W. Birdseye (1863), M. J. Nevin (1877), S. M. L. Barlow (1881), R. J. Brown (1885), William Anderson (1886), Elizabeth C. Hobson (1905), C. H. Robb (1905), Bernard Carter (1905), May S. Kennedy (1905), Mary Speer (1905), and Louisa Anderson Henry.
Subject matter varies greatly from politics to family issues. There is mention of the political figures and climate in Lancaster and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania just prior to and after the start of the Civil War. There are also letters discussing the publication of Stephen Foster's songs, George Ticknor Curtis' biography of James Buchanan, the death of Louisa Anderson Henry, and the status of Harriet Lane Johnston's paintings after her death. The majority of the letters were either from or to Pennsylvania, particularly Lancaster County, with a few from New York and Washington, DC. The letters are arranged in chronological order and range from 1843 through 1905.
Admin/Biographical History
Many of the individuals named throughout this part of the collection are unknown, only their names as they appear on the document and the dates on those documents represent their history. There are a few exceptions.
Simon Cameron was a Pennsylvania senator in 1845 and Lincoln's Secretary of War during the Civil War. Most of his political career was tarnished with corruption scandals and rumors. He was also a staunch opponent of James Buchanan.
George Ticknor Curtis was an attorney and author who wrote a biography of James Buchanan in 1883 entitled "Life of James Buchanan: 15th President of the United States."
Reverend John Grimke Drayton was a highly respected Episcopalian minister from South Carolina, known for advocating on behalf of slaves and creating beautiful gardens on his estate as part of his legacy.
Jonathan Foltz was a Naval doctor and close acquaintance with James Buchanan. Part 7 of this collection contains letters to and from Dr. Foltz.
Virginia Pleasonton was an acquaintance of Harriet Lane Johnston and James Buchanan Henry and there are few letters from her to Mr. Henry in Part 3 of this collection.
Stephen C. Foster was an American songwriter during the 1850's and 1860's, who composed "Camptown Races" and "Oh, Susannah!". His brother was Morrison Foster and his sister, Ann Elizabeth Foster, married Reverend Edward Young Buchanan, James Buchanan's brother, in 1833.
Henry A. Muhlenberg was an attorney who served as both a Congressman and a Senator for Pennsylvania.
