Opinion of Judge Black regarding provisions of James Buchanan’s will: canes are not included in the category of wearing apparel; the sum of $12,000, the valuation of Wheatland in the will, is to be deducted from Harriet Lane Johnston’s one fourth of the general estate, any pecuniary value of James Buchanan’s papers must be divided among the legatees, but the executors may use their judgment in distributing papers of only sentimental value ; and a copy of only the canes and papers provisions in another hand. Swarr, executors of the estate of James Buchanan; after quoting the terms of the last will and testament of James Buchanan, the audit lists the expenses and distributing the remaining amount as follows: Harriet Lane Johnston $4643.76, John N. Lane $202.26, James B. Lane $202.26, Elliott E. Lane $202.26, John B. Weaver $151.69, EYB $782.45, James Buchanan Henry $613.57, Mary E. Dunham $306.77, James B. Weaver $76.69, Maria B. Weaver $76.69, and Jessie Magaw $76,69, Aggregate of contribution to biographical fund $1875.00, and aggregate if succession tax $108.39 for a grand total of $6314.69; and accounts for the bonds of the State of Tennessee; certified on 22 November 1873 by S. J. Kauffman, Deputy Clerk of Orphan’s Court.

Letter to H. B. Swarr from H. R. Riddle stating that he will sell the Shepherdstown Bridge stock in compliance with Virginia laws and will dispense the first installment of the funds to Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Kennedy, Mr. Winter and Mrs. Nicklin according to paperwork provided by Mr. Swarr; stating that he has visited the Lane lands in Bedford County and found that one tract is worthless but the others have coal and are near a railroad; quoting from a letter written by Charles B. Hitchcock, agent for the Lane lands since 1848, saying there are 34 taxed lots; and asking that he might be authorized to sell all the lands. 170 Park St., Baltimore MD.
