Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester asking her pardon for not writing earlier; Mrs. Plitt still at Wheatland; Uncle well and calm as he awaits the outcome of the election today; wishing Lily had written more as a political writer; Robert Eden’s former dark red moustache; Eskridge getting along well using a crutch and cane; the toll that the campaign took on the family; in the election “right will prevail”; Emily Schaumburg’s staying with the Porters; Colonel Pleasonton’s engagement to a widow with many children and Addy’s reaction; and suggests that Lily’s father might follow the same example to give Lily some children to play with. Swarr stating that he would certainly be present for giving depositions in connection with the exceptions to Mr. Swift’s report, were it not that his health requires him to avoid all excitement, but he will send relevant documents; denying that Mrs. Johnston offered to contribute double the sum that Rev. Edward Young Buchanan or James Buchanan Henry might contribute to the fund for the biography, but instead offered to unite with Rev. Buchanan or Mr. Henry in contributing equally the sum of $5000 each; and suggesting that the $5000 for the fund should properly remain in the estate, since it was mentioned in their second account which was duly confirmed. Swarr stating that he has a temporary address with Mr. Cassatt at Haverford College; noting that Elliott Eskridge Lane was pleased to receive interest on interest, but had trouble withdrawing the money until Edward Young Buchanan added the word “guardians” after his and Swarr’s names; approving Mr. Ancona to have use of the Buchanan Scholarship, assuming that Swarr thinks the young man “proper and deserving”; thanking Swarr for the $23.50 pertaining to Harriet Lane Johnston’s trust fund; and surmising that Mr. Curtis, who is now at Richfield Springs, will bring out the biography before long. 1342 Pine Street, Philadelphia.

Swarr agreeing to the payment of the taxes on Wheatland but thinks the assessment was too high; inquires about the status of James Buchanan’s canes; noting that Charles Macalester was in Philadelphia and that the friends of the President were indignant at how the Messrs. Henry and Buchanan treated Mrs. Johnston, apparently over the handling of the “dismantling” of Wheatland and disposal of the portrait of the Prince of Wales; inquires about the progress of settling James Buchanan’s estate and offers to give advice; inquires about the status of Eskridge Lane’s estate, of which Mrs. Johnston is administratrix; requests a copy of all the proceedings of James Buchanan’s estate; comments on U. S. Grant’s visit to Baltimore and its contrast with that of Andrew Johnson to Philadelphia, and the entertainment of Grant by neighbors, regretting that they could not attend because of Mrs. Johnston’s bereavement.
