(1) Judge Black’s version, with Mrs. Johnston receiving $14,605.33 in cash,
(2) Mrs. Johnston’s version, with her receiving, in addition to the valuation of Wheatland, $18,605.33 in cash, and
(3) the version of the executors, E. Y. Buchanan and J. B. Henry, with, after the subtraction of $12,000 for the valuation of Wheatland, Mrs. Johnston receiving $6,605.33 in cash. Lancaster.

Letter to Henry E. Johnston from H. B. Swarr requesting the delivery of Mrs. Johnston’s estate papers to Wheatland as soon as convenient; stating that in his letter of March 24th he had defended Edward Young Buchanan as co-executor using words copied from one of James Buchanan’s truest friends, a gentleman known to and respected by Mr. and Mrs. Johnston; explaining that his request for Mrs. Johnston to suggest a biographer for James Buchanan was meant to “hasten its accomplishment;” and stating his wish to perform his duty to the estate and legatees of the deceased while maintaining “ kindly relations with all.” Handwritten by unknown and signed by H. B. Swarr. Lancaster.

Swarr explaining that he will transmit to Edward Young Buchanan her concerns about the cemetery lots and the railing but without her accompanying remarks; noting that the mistake regarding the railings has been rectified so that the railings and posts are now placed entirely within the borders of the estate lots selected by James Buchanan for his place of interment, and will not include the additional lots jointly purchased; and regretting having to relate the details but wanting her to have all the facts. Letter from Harriet Lane to Mr. [Charles] Macalester in response to a letter received, enclosing a check from James Buchanan, and thanking him for the Claret. She goes on to say "The secession of medical students seems to have created very little stir in the great world generally, although the patriot Wise has made it the theme to one of his great productions. I am delighted to hear that Korty has moved his rooms to such a pleasant locality . . . For my own part, I rather approve of the Queen sending 'single men' as her representatives here . . . I expect to dine with the British Minister today-it will be the beginning of a series of ladies dinners at his hospitable mansion." Washington, D.C.
