Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr noting that he has received a proposal to write the biography of James Buchanan from Mr. Shunk, who would be under the influence of Judge Black and his partially false opinions about the end of Buchanan’s administration; wondering about Mrs. Johnston’s views of Mr. Reed or the book; hoping that Mrs. Johnston has received her interest on her trust funds and is satisfied with them; noting that funds for John Weaver’s school will soon be due and suggesting that these funds and those for the Lane boys be legally invested; and noting that Mr. Reed’s property on Chestnut Hill is advertised at sheriff’s sale in the Daily Age. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr thanking him for sending Mr. Reed’s article from the Baltimore Gazette and his note, which he returns; doubting that Mr. Reed’s article was much of a vindication; expressing no surprise at Judge Black’s opinions; hoping to see Judge Cadwalader and make arrangements about the files of the Intelligencer & Journal and permission to see the papers still at Wheatland; planning to stay at the Atlantic Hotel in Cape May; and believing that Mr. and Mrs. Johnston must be pleased that Judge Cadwalader and not Judge Black has been appointed as James Buchanan’s biographer. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr gratefully acknowledging receipt of the semi-annual interest on his Russell mortgages; wishing to discuss Mr. Wiley’s mortgage; noting that Miss Hetty and Mrs. Dunham are visiting and that Miss Hetty has informed him that the Johnstons are planning a trip to Montreal; requesting information on what the Johnstons are planning to do about the law suit; and noting how unseemly it appeared for African-American men to be voting alongside white men at the polls in Frankford that morning. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr regretting that the weather prevented him from coming to Lancaster to attend the funeral of Mr. Wharton; hoping that the matter of the mortgage has been straightened out with Mr. McMurtrie and the purchaser; returning receipts for money received on behalf of John Weaver and Mr. Johnston’s letter; replying at length to Mr. Johnston’s objections about the housing of James Buchanan’s papers; advising no reference to Judge Black’s alleged opinion on the value of the papers; advising no reply to Mr. Johnston’s request for suggestions for the author of James Buchanan’s biography, except in noting that Mr. Shunk is unacceptable; advising warning that funds might need to be withheld from the estate if Mr. Johnston keeps threatening legal action; raising the suggestion that presidential papers now at Wheatland be removed to Mr. Swarr’s home; and asking that his name not be mentioned in his reply to Mr. Johnston.
