Carter to sign a release; is generally satisfied with the trustee’s account of Harriet Lane Johnston’s trust but questions some small charges; says that Mrs. Johnston is upset that the papers of James Buchanan are in the hands of Mr. E. Y. Buchanan, especially after his handling of other items including the picture of the Prince of Wales; wants the papers, valued at $50,000 by Judge Black, transferred to the Safe Deposit Company. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr informing him that Judge Black had asked to meet with James Buchanan Henry and himself, but that he could not because Mr. Henry had left and because he is opposed to Judge Black’s appointment as James Buchanan’s biographer, because he disapproves of Judge Black’s letter to the New York Herald in January 1870. This letter concerned the “consternation & grief” which the Cabinet felt on hearing James Buchanan’s response to the South Carolina Commissioners. In fact the changes in President Buchanan’s “views and proceedings” were caused by the secessionists in Charleston. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

Swarr, his first since leaving America in the autumn, describing their travels, the Carnival in Rome, not seeing the Pope, but catching a glimpse of Victor Emmanuel, all in crowds of tourists from America and England; reporting that his son William became ill in Paris and will come for rest in Italy; noting that John Lane must have reached his majority and received his inheritance; expressing satisfaction that the Foltz case was settled favorably; and asking for new information to be sent to him in London on whether Judge Black intends to write a history of James Buchanan’s presidency; and sending good wishes to Mrs. Swarr, Mrs. Kremer, Miss Mary, Charles, Mr. Swift, and Miss Hetty.
