Letter to James Buchanan from Viers Bowie regretting accepting Colonel Leonard’s offer of trusteeship of his land because of the unstable situation in the sale of land during the Civil War and that the Leonards owned slaves, many of whom were being “corrupted” by Northern soldiers and the fear that if the Southerners come north to Washington, the area will become a battlefield; he concludes that he will do his duty no matter how distasteful; Leonard had intimated that Buchanan would promote him so that he would have money to pay the claim. The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.

Blake urging Mr. Riggs to force a sale of the farm on which the Leonards currently live over Mr. Bowie’s objections; lambasts the “despotic” Lincoln administration for its latest “document”; thinks that friends of McClellan are foolish to put his name forward for the Presidency unless he has the backing of the Democratic Party and other conservative groups; and that James Henry has just argued a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Custodial History
The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter to James Buchanan from George W. Riggs reporting that Mr. Bowie explains that he cannot sell the Leonard property because of the requirement that the notice be printed in the local newspaper, which is out of business. Washington.
