The James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Papers of James Buchanan, Series 1 Correspondence, Subseries 1 contains letters to James Buchanan and Subseries 2 contains letters from James Buchanan. Within these subseries, the letters are arranged chronologically, dating from 1819-1868.
This collection contains letters, both to and from James Buchanan. The letters from Buchanan range from the different periods of his life-as a private citizen and lawyer, senator, and ambassador to Russia and Britain; his Presidential term from 1857 to 1861; and his later years until his death in 1868. The earlier letters include details of his travels, political matters and the military, social engagements and responsibilities, his responsibilities as a political figure, and accounts of family chatter and gossip. He also discusses at length, in his letters to and about Harriet Lane, his opinions of whom she should marry, his opinions about her social encounters and interactions, her living situations, and her livelihood. Buchanan also often wrote about his Christian beliefs, especially during the later years of his life. Letters from his later years detail the day-to-day life at home in Wheatland, including some of his guests, his servants, and his illnesses as the end of his life neared.
The letters that are addressed to James Buchanan range in different topics, concerning military affairs, political and legal information, and family chatter. Other letters include details of Buchanan's financial matters that are in reference to loans, Buchanan's investments and purchases, deeds and bonds. There are also a number of thank-you letters and notes of recommendation.

Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States. The James Buchanan Family Papers collection is organized into eight parts: Part 1 Papers of James Buchanan, Part 2 Papers of Harriet Lane Johnston, Part 3 Papers of James Buchanan Henry, Part 4 Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Part 5 Papers of Other members of the Buchanan Family, Part 6 Papers of Hiram B. Swarr, Part 7 Papers of Jonathan Messersmith Foltz, and Part 8 Papers of Others (Not Part of the Family). The papers are arranged by category within each part.
The correspondence is both professional and personal. The letters provide information about family and social events, business and military affairs, social and political history, health and illnesses, religious beliefs, education, friendships, domestic staff, and Wheatland. Political letters specifically highlight the Democratic Party in the United States in the early to mid-nineteenth century, as well as foreign policy and politics while Buchanan was the ambassador to Russia and England. Personal letters share family, local, regional, and international news between family members and friends.
Financial and legal documents include business papers, property records, estate papers, plans for James Buchanan's tomb, and investments. James Buchanan's 1856 presidential campaign and 1857 inauguration are captured in campaign ephemera, political cartoons, Democratic tickets, invitations to the inaugural ball, newspaper articles, and a political song. Other items in the collection include speeches, ephemera, genealogy, diplomas and certificates, account books, scrapbooks, newspaper articles, invitations, programs, pastoral records, and poetry.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane advising her to ask Mrs. Kennedy to appoint H. B. Swarr her attorney to draw up estate papers; admitting that he opened the enclosed letter from Mr. Florey in which he wants to close a loan to her but with conditions; thinking that the influence of Parson Rosenmiller on Dr. Lane would affect adversely the estates of the family; asking that she find out from James Henry whether New York paid interest in gold or “depreciated paper”; finding pleasure in visiting his Chester County farm; and rejoicing at Mrs. Henry’s recovery. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr stating that he would certainly be present for giving depositions in connection with the exceptions to Mr. Swift’s report, were it not that his health requires him to avoid all excitement, but he will send relevant documents; denying that Mrs. Johnston offered to contribute double the sum that Rev. Edward Young Buchanan or James Buchanan Henry might contribute to the fund for the biography, but instead offered to unite with Rev. Buchanan or Mr. Henry in contributing equally the sum of $5000 each; and suggesting that the $5000 for the fund should properly remain in the estate, since it was mentioned in their second account which was duly confirmed. Third and final audit of J. W. F. Swift of the distribution of the “balance in the hands of EYB and H. B. Swarr, executors of the estate of James Buchanan; after quoting the terms of the last will and testament of James Buchanan, the audit lists the expenses and distributing the remaining amount as follows: Harriet Lane Johnston $4643.76, John N. Lane $202.26, James B. Lane $202.26, Elliott E. Lane $202.26, John B. Weaver $151.69, EYB $782.45, James Buchanan Henry $613.57, Mary E. Dunham $306.77, James B. Weaver $76.69, Maria B. Weaver $76.69, and Jessie Magaw $76,69, Aggregate of contribution to biographical fund $1875.00, and aggregate if succession tax $108.39 for a grand total of $6314.69; and accounts for the bonds of the State of Tennessee; certified on 22 November 1873 by S. J. Kauffman, Deputy Clerk of Orphan’s Court.
