On front of envelope: “letter of ‘Colebrook’ to ‘Buchanan’ refers to campaign fight of July 1820.” On back of envelope: “Major Charles M. Howell, Chief Marshall of Puncia.” [1820]

Custodial History
The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Framed miniature portrait of James Buchanan. In deep molded walnut frame. Buchanan in dark suit with white shirt, high collar. Image measures 2 1/2" in width by 3" in length. Overall dimension of frame is 6 1/2" in width and 7 1/8" in length. Hand written note on back reads: "On Ivory / Miniature of / James Buchanan / Ex President of the / United States / presented to / Maj. Chas. M. Howell / a friend and great / admirer of Buchanan's / artist unknown."

Renunciations are papers filed in the Orphans' Court by executors of an estate who do not wish to administer that estate. They show the name of the decedent, the decedent's place of residence, the name of the person renouncing administration, the name of the replacement administrator to be appointed, and date.
