Swarr noting that he has received a proposal to write the biography of James Buchanan from Mr. Shunk, who would be under the influence of Judge Black and his partially false opinions about the end of Buchanan’s administration; wondering about Mrs. Johnston’s views of Mr. Reed or the book; hoping that Mrs. Johnston has received her interest on her trust funds and is satisfied with them; noting that funds for John Weaver’s school will soon be due and suggesting that these funds and those for the Lane boys be legally invested; and noting that Mr. Reed’s property on Chestnut Hill is advertised at sheriff’s sale in the Daily Age. Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons.
