Originally Bailey & Co, the company was founded by Joseph Trowbridge Bailey and Andrew B. Kitchen. It was located at 136 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1840 Joseph’s brother Eli Westcott Bailey, a New York City jeweler and importer hurt financially by the Panic of 1837, came to Philadelphia and entered the firm. The name continued as Bailey & Kitchen. When Joseph died, Eli became the senior partner of Bailey & Co. until he retired in 1867.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane stating that he opened her letter from Mrs. Kennedy and read the part dealing with John Lane’s estate; hoping that Mr. Riddle visits Lancaster when she is there; saying that a case has been argued in Harrisburg with no decision yet; expressing sorrow at the illness of James Henry’s wife; reporting that Bob Nevin visited last night and that he had his hand on General Whipple’s shoulder when he was mortally wounded and is taking the body to New Hampshire; expressing disappointment that no welcoming was planned for the 122nd Regiment; hoping the political parties may not “have a collision,” and having no further information about the Lanes except that Dick’s house is not yet finished. Swarr, executors of the estate of James Buchanan; after quoting the terms of the last will and testament of James Buchanan, the audit lists the expenses and distributing the remaining amount as follows: Harriet Lane Johnston $4643.76, John N. Lane $202.26, James B. Lane $202.26, Elliott E. Lane $202.26, John B. Weaver $151.69, EYB $782.45, James Buchanan Henry $613.57, Mary E. Dunham $306.77, James B. Weaver $76.69, Maria B. Weaver $76.69, and Jessie Magaw $76,69, Aggregate of contribution to biographical fund $1875.00, and aggregate if succession tax $108.39 for a grand total of $6314.69; and accounts for the bonds of the State of Tennessee; certified on 22 November 1873 by S. J. Kauffman, Deputy Clerk of Orphan’s Court.

Printed version of the will of James Buchanan directing that his body be interred in the Woodward Hill Cemetery; that all debts (“which are small”) be paid out of the estate; that the furnishings of the house be divided among Harriet L. Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan and J. Buchanan Henry, with the provision that Esther Parker be given $200 worth of the articles; bequeaths his wearing apparel, gold watch, watch chain and seals to Edward Y. Buchanan; bequeaths $5000 to Esther Parker; bequeaths his two certificates of loan, Nos. 43 and 43 or the sum of $2,000 if the certificates have been disposed of “for the use of poor and indigent females of the city” to be added to the $4,000 already provided; bequeaths $1,000 to the Presbyterian church in Lancaster of which he is a member; directs that all the real estate he owns be sold; directs that the proceeds from the sale of real estate, rents, etc., be distributed as described to his relatives: Harriet Lane Johnston, Edward Y. Buchanan, J. Buchanan Henry, John B. Lane, James B. Lane, Elliott E. Lane; Mary E. Dunham, Maria B. Weaver, Jessie Magaw, James B. Weaver, John Bliss Weaver and Maria Magaw. Codicils bequeath sums of money to Martha J. Lane, William B. Reed (to write his biography), his wife, Mary L. Reed; domestics Peter Hillyer, Mary Smithgall, Lizzie Stoner; and finally, bequeaths the dwelling at Wheatland and all its land of 22 acres to Harriet Lane Johnston. Lancaster.
