Digitization of the James Buchanan Collection was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Family record written on both sides of a detached page from a Bible. First side has a foliate perimeter border w/ three flowers along top. Additional flowers decorate inside corners. Large oval contains family info, but only the first 1/3 of the page is written in Fraktur style lettering (father, mother, marriage and one daughter). Attrib. to John Eberman who has drawn lines as guides for his scrivening. At top is Johannes Kredi, born 24 Dec 1794, his wife Magdalena, born 16 Jan 1797 and their marriage 20 Feb 1823. Following is daughter Veronica, b. 1824 (later called Fanny).
Additional entries in plain German handwriting. First entry lists both John, born 1826 and death of mother the same year; certainly caused by childbirth. Below a line border entry records John and new wife "Margred" b. 1807, married 11 Oct 1827. Below a line border is birth of Jacob, 1828.
Second side has 4 entries within the bleed-through of the large oval, each separated with a border filled with "X"es and each line hand-ruled. First is Henry, b. 1830; second is "Davit" b. 1834; third is "Benjemin" b. 1836 and fourth is Elizabeth b. 1839.
Yellowed paper has fooxing and fairly dark stains throughout, esp. heavy along bottom border. Vertical and horizontal fold lines are fragile with some breaking at page edges.

Appraisal done by Pastor Fred Weiser on 2 Sept 1988. Marked fraktur #34 during this event.
Johannes died 31 March 1851. One year before his death, family is listed in 1850 Census in Manor Township:
Reward of merit, elaborately cut out of laid paper, watercolored. It is one of four found in a family Bible. Bestowed upon a deserving student by a school teacher, this piece portrays a variety of stylized flowers, done in the unique style of Jacob Botz.
This symmetrical papercut was created with one vertical center fold. Overall design is six main flowers; top pair of flowers have human faces. Scherenschnitte is decorated with polychome watercolors.

This is one of four small Frakturs found in a Family Bible (the Bible was ultimately given to another party). Russ and Corinne Earnest served as brokers for these four frakturs. The owner wished to remain anonymous, but desired that all four remain intact as a group. Total purchase price was $19,800, but reimbursed by Irene N. Walsh.
The Earnests reported that the owner's family has roots in Manor Twp., but it is unknown if the fraktur descended in this family.
Original condition: Small piece broken off stem at right center. Blue-painted petals at center are flaking. Multiple stains around perimeter.
Conserved & mounted in a 4-window mat package by Susan Duhl, Sept. 2001. Then framed by Lancaster Galleries in black frame H: 13 1/8" W: 23".

The Lindemuth family first settled in the Mount Joy-Maytown area. According to Clarke Hess & Jim Nissley, Margaretha (Margaret) Linde(n)muth was born June 26, 1790 and died Dec. 31, 1875, a daughter of George Lindenmuth (1752-1818) and granddaughter of Ludwig Lindenmuth (1716-ca.1777) who immigrated from Germany in 1750.
Later contact with owner/seller, Jim Nissley of Mt.Joy (653-4798), who discovered Lindemuths in his family tree. Margaretha's niece (daughter of her brother Jacob), Sarah Lindemuth (1833-1908) married Daniel B. Nissley (1829-1919). They are Jim's great great grandparents. (See Biog. Annals entry on D.B. Nissley & other records of Jim Nissley in this file.)

This is a reward of merit, a fraktur given to a deserving student by a school teacher. This cut-out piece is done on a rectangular piece of laid paper, has a large sunflower-like flower with a face drawn in its center. Extending from the stem is a pair of daisies and a pair of tulips. Has a yellow border edged in red and at bottom is the name of "Margaretha Lindenmuthin" inscribed in the same red. Yellow dominates, followed by red, then lesser use of blue and green. See NOTES.

Henry expressing joy that he and Margaret are enjoying Italy and hopes to visit someday; had a family reunion in Washington with Aunt Lena, the girls, Frank, Sid, and Reg; met a friend at the Pittsburgh railroad station; in Cambridge to check of the small railroad shop; the drought has reduced the streams so much that the water is not suitable for the engines; hopes for a mild winter to aid in running the engines; Jean and Rob are settled in their apartment which Sid finds cozy; and is attending a “stag” party thrown by a good customer of the railroad and will be attended by “big bugs” such as the mayor. Henry thinking that James Buchanan Henry will be surprised to hear from Columbia; mentions Wheatland and Lititz – Wheatland is not used for growing flowers and Lititz makes the best pretzels; is happy to have nothing to do but thinks Boston is good for his health; is looking forward to his last semester in Boston but doesn’t know where he will be posted; had a grand reunion in Washington with Aunt Lena, Dorothy, Eleanor, Will, Reg, and Frank; scarlet fever forced Aunt Lena to move to a new place; visited Rob and Jean at their home; has not done any work and now kept indoors by a raging blizzard going into its third day; comments on the situation in Russian but thinks the czar can handle it; and wishes good luck to Margaret.
