Description: This collection contains receipts and invoices from the Pinkerton & Slaymaker business. The receipts date primarily from May 1851, with one receipt from May 1853, and are for a wide variety of items. The collection also contains letters from the Philadelphia & Lancaster Turnpike Company and an undated check from the National Bank of Pottstown.

Admin/Biographical History: Henry Edwin Slaymaker and William C. Pinkerton went into the hardware business as Pinkerton & Slaymaker ca. 1850. The store was located on North Queen Street in Lancaster. The business was closed out in 1857.; Biographical Annals of Lancaster County, p. 94.

Description: Copy of the list of contributors to the new stand of colors presented to the 79th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers at Murfreesboro, Tennessee.; "We, the undersigned agree to pay the sums set opposite our names ($1. each) for the purpose of purchasing a stand of colors for the 79th Pennsylvania (Lancaster County) Regiment of Volunteers, commanded by Col. Henry A. Hambright--to be presented as a testimonial of the high regard and esteem in which they are held by their fellow-citizens at home, for their admirable discipline and unflinching bravery at Chaplin Hills and Chattanooga."; The names have been recorded in the copy, they are not the original signatures and may not be accurate.

Provenance: Photographs from MG-63, the Johnny Houck Collection. Houck was a local boxing historian and brother of noted local boxer Leo Houck. The Houcks grew up in Lancaster's Cabbage Hill neighborhood and were known as all-around athletes.

Description: "Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Miller, married May 8th 1915. This picture was taken about August, three months later at Murrow's Studio on W. Market St. in York, Pa. Johnny, this suit was the one he wore to Lancaster when he boxed your brother Leo right after we were married."
