Henry consoling him on his loss by exhorting him to rely on God, relatives, and friends for support; people including Mrs. Coulter, Aunt Till, Elizabeth; James was in town and had offers on a house; Mrs. Contes took some books; some pastors were there; Mr. Campbell and Mr. Penn send their regards; some items “went beyond their value”; Mr. Ogle, Mr. Marsh, and General Ross “a classmate of Mr. Buchanan’s” caused some gossip; mentions Elizabeth, Mrs. Coulter, and the Harrison family; [Parts of letter missing, making summarizing difficult]. The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
