Multicolored Vorschrift done by schoolmaster/fraktur artist Christian Strenge on rectangular laid paper. Bordered in a yellow band with red corners. German script text has an elaborately embellished large upper case letter "K" at upper left and multicolored floral design filling entire right side, surmounted by a distinctive yellow crested bird. Colors are red, yellow, blue and green. Modern frame.
Hand-printed in black ink above the letter "K" is the name of recipient, David Neff. Signed at the bottom by Strenge in German script: "Written in Hempfield Township in the year 1801 by Christian Strenge." Inscribed on reverse in script is "David Neff" in black ink.
The text begins with Psalm 95:1-4, "Kommt lasset(?) uns dem...," followed by two alphabets, the first in upper case and the second in lower case, and finally the numerals 1 - 14. (See translation on copy of nearly identical fraktur in file).

Provenance: This Vorschrift was recently found in a book in the library of Sarah Stauffer on Lime Spring farm along the Marietta Pike. Consigned to sale at Conestoga Auction Co. and purchased 29 June 1998 with funds from V. Ronald Smith ($9,725) and the Donegal Chapter of the D.A.R. ($125).
John J. Snyder, Jr. researched Stauffer genealogy to discover a relationship to David Neff. See letters & charts in this file which explain the likelihood that the fraktur may have passed from Neff (probably when he went to Ohio, perhaps unknowingly hidden in a book, even as it was found recently) to his cousins, such as Anna Bear Lehman who is in the direct line of Stauffer descent. David Neff (1791-1866) was the son of Henry & Anna Oberholzer Neff. He would have been about 10 yrs. old when fraktur was made.
Generally good condition, although two folds show some breaking with tangential tears. Other minor tears and one small hole at right center. Some soiling, foxing and minor stains overall. Edges lifting in frame.
Conserved 1998 by Marilyn Kemp Weidner of Phila. Surfaced cleaned and losses repaired. Hinge-mounted on acid free mat and sealed in a package for framing. Mounted in modern black frame by Lancaster Galleries circa 2004.

Family record by Christian Strenge (1757-1828), done on laid paper for Isaac Kauffman family. Within a yellow border are 17 lines of German text, penned in red with lines of curlicues separating each line. Text fills most of page, giving birth dates & Zodiac signs for Kauffman, his wife and 6 children. To right of text is a large stylized, round flower rising from a yellow heart and having side branches with tulips & other flowers. Serpentine flowering vine fills margin along left side. Reverse has some old, faint pencil inscriptions on right side: "Landis" (?) written twice and a nearby sum (17+4=21).

Soil, foxing and staining overall. Two fold lines intersecting at center are breaking with some holes/losses. Repaired on reverse with various papers & tapes at different times. Holes and losses around perimeter. Pronounced damp stains at center fold line. Significant paint loss in leaves, stems and branches.
Frame is chipped and worn, missing some delaminated veneers. Repairs to veneers. Old acidic back boards of cardboard replaced in 2001 by curator w/ acid free foam board.

Notes
According to fraktur scholar David Johnson, Isaac Kauffman was a farmer who lived on the south side of Leabrook Road from his parents. His parents, Jacob and Eve Kauffman, built the original nearby mill in 1755 (what is now Flory's Mill) and was operated by the Kauffman family until the late 19th century.

Fraktur is a Vorschrift, drawn, lettered and colored by schoolmaster Christian Strenge. Mounted in a window mat of off-white, with a modern frame of dark-stained softwood. Within an outside border dark blue is a floral vine border with mostly tulips and some 4-petal flowers is the text. It begins "Ich will den herrn / loben mein lebenlang und mit meinem Gott uber die Mauren springen." (I want to praise the lord all my life long and jump over the walls with my God.). Lettering is intricately decorated and colored. The initial "I" of text is oversized. At left of this "I" is "den 1ten may / anno 1787" in the same letter style, but half size.
Following the main text are six words written in script, followed by the alphabet with both fraktur and script letters. At the end are what appears to be "A.O.U." Final line is "maria millerin." in large letters. Reverse side has "Weiser #25" in pencil.

Paper is embrittled, buckling and darkened from acid burn with extensive foxing. Some losses at edges. Large area of loss about 2.5" - 4.5" from bottom left corner. These holes/losses extend 2" up from bottom, with edges appearing to have been burned. Colors and ink have faded.

Appraisal conducted by Pastor Fred Weiser, Sept. 2, 1988. Weiser writes "The owner Strenge's first wife or a relative of her." Strenge's 2nd wife was Mary Eve Miller of Lancaster. This fraktur is an almost identical vorschrift done for Christian Miller on the same date, in the collection of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. The Millers were apparently siblings.
Also in LHO collections is a religious text for Maria Miller done the following year in 1788. Another religious text was done for William Miller on the same date (also from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin).
Liebesbriefe (love letter) papercut or scherenschnitte on laid paper, mounted on green paperboard within a black wooden frame. Intricately cut circular design has narrow sawtooth border and cutout hearts, urns and flowers (tulips and carnations) in a repeated design. Center has a large flower-like, scalloped edged shape outlined in blue and lines of text written in red ink around periphery. It reads: "Lieben und nicht haben ist harter dann stein graben, und nicht bey sammen seyn(?) / ist fur wahr die groste pein." Appears to read: To love and not have (have love requited) is harder than stone (graben?) and not by ? ? ? is in truth the greatest pain.
16 inverted hearts dominate outer area, arranged in a staggered fashion around periphery. Each heart is alternately edged in blue or red and each is numbered and infilled with an expression of love written in red ink. Eight 2-handled urns radiate outward from center filled with tulip plants that connect with the hearts. Vasiform paper shapes alternate with urns and are decorated with drawings of tulips and blue flowers. Watercolor decoration is typical color palette of red, yellow, blue and what originally was green foliage. On back of acidic paperboard is written "This is probably Christian Strange (sic) Cut-Out." Old paper label taped to back is printed "An Old Pennsylvania / German Valentine."

Delicate cutout has heavy losses, especially sawtooth border, parts of flowers & leaves as well as 3 missing vasiform (resembling a tube/duct) shapes with the floral drawings. Fold lines are broken and breaking. Paper generally age-darkened with some scattered light brown stains. Multiple repairs detached elements and pieces of paper pasted onto back for support. Black painted frame has abrasions. Glass has some light molding on inside surface.

Religious text by Christian Strenge on wove paper, pasted on Kraft type brown paper and mounted in a hinged window mat. Horizontal orientation.
Within heavy black borders with red corner blocks are multiple lines of text, each separated by several motifs resembling a sideways ampersand. Top line is "Preiset mit mur den herren und lasset uns" done with large open letters and decorative infill. Followed by 3 lines of fraktur red lettering, ending with the reference Psalm 34 verses 4, 5 and 6. Remaining text is script, ending with "April 1788."
Dominating fraktur design are two very large distinctive, colorful flowers drawn with a compass. Main stem with drooping tulips & other flowers at sides and is rooted in a heart containing verse. A bold red predominates
First line translation is "Praise with me the Lord and let us...". On fraktur back is printed "property of Lancaster County Historical Society."
Extensive damage. Very dark with overall acid burn. Multiple losses, especially at left side and upper left corner with very ragged edges and holes. Additional heavy paper losses at bottom, right of center and significant holes extend across area above "Preiset". Paint is chipped, abraded and missing, especially black. Thin wrinkle extends across bottom about 1 inch from bottom. Pasted to acidic Kraft type paper.
