Description
James Buchanan Family Papers Part 4, Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Series 1 contains the correspondence of Edward Young Buchanan from 1865 to 1883 and is divided into two subseries.
Edward, James Buchanan's brother, was co-executor of his brother's estate. The letters in this collection pertain mostly to the settlement of James Buchanan's estate, including the President's papers, biography, and memorial site. There are references to many nieces and nephews, especially Harriet Lane Johnston. Many of the letters from Edward are to James Buchanan's co-executor, Hiram B. Swarr. The letters to Edward are from William B. Reed, Charles M. Howell, and John Cadwalader.
Admin/Biographical History
Reverend Edward Young Buchanan (1811-1895) was born on May 30, 1811 in Mercersburg in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the child of James Buchanan (1761-1821) and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan (1767-1833). He was the younger brother of President James Buchanan (1791-1868). He went to college at Dickinson College. He later became a reverend.
In 1833, he married Anne Eliza Foster Buchanan (1812-1891), and together they had six children: Ann Elizabeth (1838-1927), Harriet (1841-1912), Henrietta Jane (1844-1906), Marie Lois (1847-1920), William Foster (1849-1875), and Alice Conyngham (1852-1931).
Rev. Edward Young Buchanan died on January 25, 1895.

Letter from Charles M. Howell to Mrs. Henry E. Johnston explaining that the weight of James Buchanan’s tomb will be carried by an interior brick arch; asserting that the plan differs only slightly from the wishes of Mr. Buchanan, unlike the draft which he received from Mr. Johnston which is very pretty; and that H. B. Swarr and E. Y. Buchanan have approved the plan. Lancaster.

Edward Young Buchanan during her short absence; asking if Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Henry have agreed to pay Mr. Reed the additional $5000; noting that the rise or fall of stocks after division should have no effect on their distribution; criticizing the broker handling the sale of securities; and urging the prompt closing of the estate. Carter to sign a release; is generally satisfied with the trustee’s account of Harriet Lane Johnston’s trust but questions some small charges; says that Mrs. Johnston is upset that the papers of James Buchanan are in the hands of Mr. E. Y. Buchanan, especially after his handling of other items including the picture of the Prince of Wales; wants the papers, valued at $50,000 by Judge Black, transferred to the Safe Deposit Company. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr detailing financial affairs. He has placed their bonds and Miss Hetty’s in the Safety Deposit Building in Philadelphia and the certificates in the Farmers & Mechanics Bank. A new Power of Attorney is required for Lehigh Valley Railroad to continue to issue dividends to the Misses Pleasanton, although he would prefer that a new Trustee be appointed to whom their securities could be transferred. He will prepare the letter to Mr. Demund soon. He has asked Mr. Johnston to bid on the sleigh with a $50.00 limit; and asks that someone be at Mr. Trout’s to receive things as they arrive. Gollden envelope with stamp but no postmark addressed to H. B. Swarr, Esq., Lancaster, Pa. On front of envelope: Edward Y.
