Sky troops - Their chutes billowing out as they descend, nine U. S. Marine Corps parachutists start a quick journey earthward from a transport plane. The descend was one of the six "static line" jumps required of every student before he can qualify as aparachutist. Practice jumps are ordinarily made from a height of about 1000 feet, while compat jumps are made from a much lesser height. These men, thier chutes, opened automatically by the "static line" inside the plane, cleared the ship in about six seconds, the photo was made at the USMC Parachute School, New River, N. C. , where the men were taking a six-week course.
