Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Lillie Welsh. From Otter Island, South Carolina. Letter thanks Lillie for writing, for telling him about her party, and chides her for running away "one day." Letter also describes his "little house," the area around the camp, and a visit from Amos Mullen. Encourages all to be good.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Effie. From Camp. Letter discusses the exchange of correspondence between various family members and encourages Effie to write more often. Answers Effie's request for a photograph for Miss Jones' Album. Letter describes the weather and reports that all are doing well in camp. Sends love and kisses to all, including Effie's "little friends and playmates. Note: Envelope and the letter are not matched; the envelope goes with an earlier letter from Port Royal, May 19, 1862.
