Lebkicher Family Civil War Letters and Discharge Papers
Description
Lebkicher Family Civil War Letters and Discharge Papers contain letters from Lebkicher family members before and during the Civil War. There are discharge papers for Jonah R. Duke and William H. Lebkicher who enlisted with Captain J. Miller Raub's Company D, 122nd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers in August 1862. William (1846-1929) re-enlisted and his letters continue to 1865. Some of the letters concern transportation by train and subsequent wrecks and derailments, the rioting in Lancaster, the shortage of food and feed for animals, and the soldiers getting used to the shelling of their camp by the rebels. The majority of letters were written during the Civil War.

Letter from Thomas Welsh to Mazie (Mary) Welsh (daughter)
Description
Handwritten letter with envelope from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Mazie. From Otter Island, South Carolina. Letter includes a description of the small "house" constructed for him by soldiers and its furnishings; mentions the weather; and details promotions and assignments made by Welsh as well as the health and death of soldiers. Encourages family to write. Envelope addressed to Miss Mazie Welsh, Box 192, Columbia.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter is good. There's a slight tear on one fold; also slight discoloration. Envelope is fair. The envelope is ragged on the edge, and the stamp has been cut out.

Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Lillie Welsh. From Otter Island, South Carolina. Letter thanks Lillie for writing, for telling him about her party, and chides her for running away "one day." Letter also describes his "little house," the area around the camp, and a visit from Amos Mullen. Encourages all to be good.

Letter details Welsh's frustration over not receiving a letter from home and not being able to secure leave to visit home. Shares news about various soldiers from Columbia under his command and the return of a deserter to his previous command. Inquires about health of the family and to give each child a kiss from him.

Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to one of his daughters. From Waterford, Virginia. Letter expresses his pleasure at learning that Lillie has recovered from her illness, his disappointment at not being able to visit home, and provides some details of life in the camp. Text includes a description of the location of the town of Waterford, noting that the inhabitants are Quaker and friendly. Welsh expresses his disappointment in not hearing more from his family, but writes of missing his family very much.

Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his parents
Description
Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to father and mother from Fairfax Court House, describing sleeping conditions, the battle nearby, and their own battle lines. The upper corner of the letter is stamped with a soldier holding up a flag in one hand and a musket in the other.
On the first page and last there are two thin, even tears about 2 inches apart starting from 1 inch down from the top of the page. Along the crease, between pages two and three, there is a slight rip about a half an inch from the bottom.
