The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie, which contains local and personal news, including a report on the progress of work on the family home. Welsh clearly misses both his wife and daughter, Alice, who are apparently on an extended visit to Annie's sister Lydia Young Karmany in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Note: Peter Vache is the husband of Annie's sister, Elizabeth. Walter may refer to Walter Young, the only child of Annie's brother, Samuel D. Young, by his first wife.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
Good condition. Slight tears on the lower edge and along one of the folds; small stain on the lower edge.

Letter from John Ford of Downingtown to Watson, his friend and schoolmaster. Ford writes that he is in good health and wishes to hear of his old friends from the academy. Says he recently met with a few of his friends at a camp meeting, including Miss Mercer, Miss Williams, George Beale, and John Mercer. He also writes that one friend has taken a teaching job.

Letter from James Buchanan to Eskridge Lane dealing with business matters; he will leave Hornby for Richmond Hill, the seat of William Brown, MP and partner in Brown, Shipley & Co; Harriet will stay there to be in the wedding of Brown’s grandson; the bride’s mother is a sister of James Coleman; and abusive articles supposedly from the “Government Organ at Washington” hampering his negotiations.
