Title
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston
Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on the funeral of Miss Yeates and the lack of the old families in attendance, but led by the Cunninghams; commenting on Catharine’s will of a number of years ago and that her sister, Mrs. Cunningham, “bore the life of her sister with Christian resignation”; lamenting the last escapade of Thomas, who is back after quitting and getting his pocket picked of his earnings but that his wife Rosanna is an excellent cook; noting the “three young ones” give much pleasure to Miss Hetty; saying that Jessie, at the age of seventeen looks more like twenty, has good manners, an amenable disposition, “quite good looking,” leaning toward corpulence, will visit General Ramsay’s family in Washington, whose daughter is a good friend; noting that Blanche Nevin is unwell; complaining about the lack of communication from Mr. Schell, but James Henry might have some information; complimenting her on her housekeeping and asking her to cultivate the female members of the Johnston family; looking forward to another visit to “the Palace” but wants only “common fare”; and noting that Mrs. Steinman and sister visited a few days ago. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.

Title
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston
Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston giving details of the funeral of Mary Field Jenkins, noting that only Ellen and Pattie of her daughters were present and that little Kate will live with Mrs. Fordney (her physicians were Drs. Ehler and Dr. Atlee); saying that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms though the boys, under the influence of “Uncle Dick” do not visit; the “embryo Bishop” has not visited; noting that Mr. Capen visited but did not mention the coal leases; expressing relief that Mr. Cobb did not visit since it could leave the impression that he approved of the “rebel members” of his cabinet; saying he doesn’t know which of the Misses Lehman is engaged to Mr. Hopkins; recalling the visits of Robert Tyler and Mr. Baker, liking Mr. Tyler, who will visit her in Baltimore; and saying he was not surprised at the latest political somersault of Revend Johnston. With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.
