Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing sorrow that she and her husband have contracted bad colds; chastising her for wishing she had a double house, advising her to “Be content with your lot” and she has “abundant reason to be so”; advising against inserting Mr. Schell’s “likeness” into the locket; the domestic Ellen’s illness has affected her mind and made Thomas “miserable and disconsolate”; George is leaving and “another colored man will take his place”; Buchanan will not go to New York because he feels unwell and cannot leave until “the girls” do, commenting that they are now sleighing with Octavius and Miss Griffith; willing to sell a house to Mrs. James Norris for $15,000 but Mrs. Lane could have it for $13,000; regretting he has not heard from the Nevins lately; gleefully announcing that Miss Annie will launch into the “Apostolic succession when Dr. Spark’s book arrives”; complaining that Mr. Capen writes far too many letters and that he answers only a few of them; advising Mr. Johnston to go ahead with his own book because Buchanan is too old to be any use; and giving his love to Emily and Bessy. With envelope addressed to 79 Monument Street, Baltimore.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing joy that she and her son are doing well; asking her to purchase a Christmas gift of jewelry for Becky Shunk; commenting on the coming holidays when Harriet Buchanan’s “lover” will be home from his divinity studies, but that she might find a more suitable match in Baltimore unless she is engaged; really upset at the snubbing of Mrs. Lane and even his interest in her children has “vanished in a great degree”; and saying he had an agreeable visit to brother Edward’s family, Lois has regained her health, and he was not dissatisfied with the abandonment of Henrietta by Cecil. Wheatland.
