Admin/Biographical History
Gen. William Spencer McCaskey was born near Paradise, Lancaster County, and was the younger brother of noted educator John Piersol McCaskey. At 17 he enlisted in Company F of the 47th Regiment during the Civil War. He reenlisted and saw combat in Kentucky, Tennessee, and participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. He mustered out in 1865 as a Captain. He reenlisted again the following year and served all over the United States before retiring as a Major General in 1907. He died in San Francisco in 1914. He was married to Eleanor Garrison, with whom he had six children: Margaret, Hiram, Garrison, Douglas, Charles, and Eleanor.

Letter James Buchanan to H. B. Swarr transmitting his approval of the merger of the two Presbyterian churches, his gratitude upon receiving a large piece of beef from friends, his hope that the Lecompton Constitution will be defeated, his appreciation to “the Democracy & my own County of Lancaster” for their support, and his surprise at the “power of endurance bestowed upon me by a kind Providence” in handling Presidential matters, important and unimportant. The prayer of Thaddeus Hyatt to James Buchanan, president of the United States, in behalf of Kansas, asking for a postponement of all the land sales in that territory, and for other relief : together with correspondence and other documents setting forth its deplorable destitution from the drought and famine : submitted under oath, October 29, 1860
"Mr Hyatt was an abolitionist and inventor. In his opposition to slavery, Hyatt organized the efforts of abolitionists in Kansas to have the territory admitted to the Union as a free-state and campaigned for the federal government to aid Kansans afflicted by drought. Hyatt befriended John Brown and provided Brown with financial support; following the raid on Harpers Ferry, Hyatt was investigated by a committee of the United States Senate." [from Wikipedia]
