Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Wheatland.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter from John B. Lebkicher to his nephew from Camp McCloud regarding his travel to Nashville as a train guard. He also mentions Uncle Jacob Rothermel and Aunt Fanny.

Letter from [Jarvis] Johnson to Samuel C. Slaymaker. The letter is labeled "confidential" and relays dissatisfaction with work of Mr. Seymour, an S. C. Slaymaker competitor; also contains poignant comments about post-slavery sentiment and Slaymaker's apparent reluctance to work in Georgia.

Letter from Edward Lebkicher to his father from camp near Hagerstown, he traveled from Harrisburg to Shippensburg and they had not stopped marching since. The Confederate Army had a rifle fight in Hagerstown and also held up the railroad from Shippensburg to Chambersburg, hence the reason he had to walk to Hagerstown. He ends the letter stating that the cost of bread is eight cents a loaf.
