Index card with biographical information that accompanied the letters, a tintype of Benjamin McComsey, and a needlepoint bookmark.
"This is the chief treasure of the McComsey family. Young son Benjamin volunteered to serve in the Civil War, and these letters tell the story of the remainder of his life.
Benjamin was the son of William McComsey, who was City Treasurer of Lanc. in the late 1800s. A descendant of Mathias McComsey, who was born in Manor Township in 1787. Benjamin's mother was Mary Dorwart, daughter of Henry, a tailor in Lancaster.
Benjamin died Nov. 7, 1862 in Berlin, Md. in the 18th year of his life. He is buried in the McComsey plot at Lancaster Cemetery."
Admin/Biographical History
Benjamin was the son of William and Mary Ann (Dorwart) McComsey. In 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Ben's service during the Civil War was brief. He enlisted in Lancaster on 7 August 1862 and was mustered into the U.S. Army on August 11 as a private with Company D, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He died from typhoid fever in a military hospital at Berlin, Worcester County, Maryland on 7 November 1862.

Newspaper article reporting the death of Brigadier General Thomas Welsh
Description
Newspaper article, "Death of General Welsh," notes that he died at the residence of Charles O. Lockard as a result of disease contracted during the Vicksburg campaign and the pursuit of General Johnston. Article recounts his military career, that he always served with distinction, and notes that he will be buried in Columbia, Lancaster County.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter from Thomas Welsh to Mazie (Mary) Welsh (daughter)
Description
Handwritten letter with envelope from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Mazie. From Otter Island, South Carolina. Letter includes a description of the small "house" constructed for him by soldiers and its furnishings; mentions the weather; and details promotions and assignments made by Welsh as well as the health and death of soldiers. Encourages family to write. Envelope addressed to Miss Mazie Welsh, Box 192, Columbia.

Letter is good. There's a slight tear on one fold; also slight discoloration. Envelope is fair. The envelope is ragged on the edge, and the stamp has been cut out.

Description
Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to father from camp at Minor's Hill, Virginia, thanking them for the postage stamps and money sent in a previous letter. He mentions the death of John Wenger, the first of their regiment, at Washington Hospital.

Letter from Ben McComsey to his parents regarding from Minor Hill, Virginia describing his current detail, drills, the weather, and being ready to march at a moment's notice. He mentions his cousins, Philip Dorwart and Henry Dorwart, the health of Henry Finifrock and William Markley, and the death of John Wenger from Typhoid fever. Ben apparently enclosed the tooth that he had pulled and is no longer with the letter.
