The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to Major Van Ness seeking a settlement of accounts upon discharge and a request for three months of extra pay for a leave of absence. Note: Welsh refers to himself as a disabled soldier which along with MG0828 SeriesB F12, shows his concern over facing a return to civilian life with a serious leg wound.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Handwritten draft or copy of a pension application for the disability of his leg wound. Written by Thomas Welsh in longhand describing in detail the leg wound he received at Buena Vista. Undated and unsigned, but evidently written in the spring of 1847. Narrative includes dates of June 9, 1846 and February 23, 1847.

Letter from Thomas Welsh to an unidentified addressee
Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to an unidentified addressee. Letter contains a detailed description of Welsh's experiences in the war and his wound at Buena Vista along with an objective analysis of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the US and Mexican armies in general and in the battles of Buena Vista and Molino Del Rey. It is unclear whether this letter was written in September 1847 or 1848, but contents indicates that it was most likely written in 1848.

Pre-printed form on War Department letterhead with the appropriate blanks filled in noting that Thomas Welsh has been appointed as 2nd Lieutenant, 11th Regiment of Infantry, effective December 30, 1847; includes handwritten instructions to report to the Commanding Officer, Fort Columbus, New York, for temporary duty and to report, by letter, to his Commanding Officer, City of Mexico, for assignment. Also includes instructions for accepting assignment through the Adjutant General's office. Signed by William Learned Marcy, Secretary of War.

Private and confidential letter from James Buchanan to John Black of the U.S. Department of State. Buchanan thanks Mr. Black for all of his hard work and informs him he is sending this letter with an important dispatch he had sent to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Mexico. He also informs Mr. Black that Colonel A. J. Atocha will be delivering these things to him, and if asked he should give any advice regarding Mexico to Colonel Atocha. Washington, D.C. 19 January 1847.

Letter to James Buchanan from J. M. Foltz which goes into more detail about the current situation in Texas and Mexico, including Foltz’s departure from the area. Fort Polk—Point Isabel Texas. Sketch of the location of various military positions in Mexico and Texas during the Mexican-American War, by J. M. Foltz. Shows General Taylor’s position, the Road to Point Isabel, Matamoros on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, and Fort Polk on Point Isabel. Foltz also makes notations of the batteries, specific battlegrounds and squadrons.
