She praises a concert given by pianist [Maurice] Strakosch and Miss Northall and urges him to purchase a piano like it. She advises him to direct his letters to the Marine Pavilion Rockaway to differentiate it from the town of Rockaway on Long Island. Signed Harriette L. Marine Pavilion [Hotel], Far Rockaway, Queens, New York City.

Title: Letter from Thomas Welsh to James Buchanan

Description: Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to James Buchanan, Secretary of State, requesting assistance or advice in seeking a commission in the peace establishment of the army. Note: along with MG0828 SeriesB F13 shows his concern over facing a return to civilian life with a serious leg wound.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
