Title: Tobias Bowman Papers

Description: The Tobias Bowman Papers contain letters and documents of Tobias Bowman of Bowmansville, Brecknock Township, from 1863 to 1898.

Admin/Biographical History: Tobias Bowman was born 30 March 1837, the son of Isaac Bowman and Judith Gehman of Bowmansville. He was self-educated, wrote letters in both English and German and acted as a scribe for neighbors. He was interested in local and family history. He died 4 March 1906 and is buried at Bowmansville Mennonite Church.

Description: The Civil War Collection consists of material acquired over many years from different sources. Coverage is of Lancaster County soldiers and of daily life in the county during the Civil War. Description: The Temperance Collection includes convention programs of the Lancaster County Woman's Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U.); a history of the group from 1884-1959; Pennsylvania State W.C.T.U. function programs; and a minute book from the Bart Chapter. Included are handwritten notes on some of the conventions, pro-temperance booklets and newspapers (Moral Reformer and American Reformer), and miscellaneous addresses and articles. Of special interest is a booklet "Operation Interview" in which 36 prominent Lancastrians comment on the question, "Is social drinking necessary for success?", and a newspaper article reminiscing on the temperance movement in Columbia, Pennsylvania.

Description: The Advertising and Promotional Collection contains materials for a wide variety of businesses and organizations in Lancaster County, including manufacturers, department and clothing stores, entertainment venues, grocery stores, restaurants, service providers, and social clubs. Of special interest is the use of both English and German in a brochure from the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., as well as in the soap-making directions from the Pennsylvania Salt Co. There are also a 1921 program from Lancaster's Colonial Theatre and boxing programs that list Lancaster native, Leo Houck.

Description: The Hood and Lockwood Family Papers contain a certificate for Bernarda Black's honorary membership in the Lincoln Farm Association, dated 19 June 1907, a copy of her obituary from the Lancaster News-Journal, 2 April 1924, miscellaneous papers and memoranda written by Alexander Hood and his father Frederick Hood, letters written to Annie Lockwood Cochran, daughter of George Lockwood and Catharine Hood, and correspondence and documents relating to the Civil War pension of Thomas Tillbrook, husband of Emma Hood Lockwood.

Admin/Biographical History: The Hon. Alexander H. Hood was a noted attorney in Lancaster. His daughter, Bernarda, married A. Ross Black, and lived in Strasburg, Lancaster County.; Annie Lockwood Cochran was the daughter of Geroge Lockwood and Catharine Hood Lockwood and wife of David Cochran.

Description: This collection contains genealogical data, Civil War Widow's Pension receipts, Lancaster city tax receipts of the family of John and Catharine Robinson, an affidavit of the birth of Anna Duke Krauskop, and an itinerary and program of the Liberty Bell's journey to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915.

Admin/Biographical History: John Robinson (1826-1866) married Catharine Burns on 9 March 1851. Their daughter, Susan (b. 1851), married Lewis Krauskop. John Robinson served in Co. B, First Pennsylvania Reserves, in the Civil War.

Description: This collection contains letters and post cards written to John B. Eshleman of Cordelia, West Hempfield Twp., from 1855 to 1887, as well as one insert with biographical information.

Admin/Biographical History: John B. Eshleman was born 11 February 1839 in West Hempfield Township. He had a common school education and taught in West Hempfield and Columbia for 36 years. Description: This collection contains papers and local government records related to Black history in Lancaster County, including an index to Lancaster County's register of enslaved persons, Mayor's Register of Coloured Persons or Negro Entry Book, and a biographical account of Rev. James William Charles Pennington. There are official records for enslaved persons and their children in Lancaster County, as well as freemen within Lancaster City. The collection also contains a manumission paper from the state of Virginia, a certificate for free persons of color, and letters from anit-slavery societies.

System of Arrangement: Series 1 consists of the "Slave Registers," official county records registering enslaved women and their children after 1780.; Series 2 contains the "Mayor's Register of Coloured Persons," a manumission paper, correspondence, and other records.
