Remarks addressed to Mr. President and possibly delivered at a large Democratic Party meeting in Columbia on September 30, 1848 of which Welsh was reported to be secretary by the Columbia Spy, 7 October 1848. Poems and notes by Thomas Welsh. This page consists of 1) Two stanzas from the anonymous short poem “Music” included at the beginning of the document use the metaphor of music to describe the grandeur of sounds found throughout nature (waterfalls, wind, rain, streams, etc.). The 2 additional lines suggest that Welsh may have been trying to add to the poem. 2) 9 lines of bold script identifying Thomas Welsh at Mrs. Philips Missouri Hotel in Little Rock, July 30, 1845; and also referencing Captain Alexander at Fort Smith; Daniel Boone Logan, son of Col. Logan, Creole Agent; Charles Adamson of Little Rock; Mr. Hicks printer; the Steamboat Frankland with Kendall as Master, Wade as Clerk, and Dallow as Bar Keeper. These appear to be notes made by Welsh to remember names and details.

Poem, "The Clarion." The first part was transcribed by Thomas Welsh, second part was evidently written by Thomas Welsh. The first eight lines are the first two stanzas from a temperance piece called "The Clarion” that appeared in a number of temperance journals in the early nineteenth century, including the Journal of the American Temperance Union, January 1841 and The Washingtonian (Augusta, Georgia), September 17, 1842. Second part seems to be an original 14 line poem by Welsh; first lines reads "Sweet one, please tell me why art thou so sad." The dates of the poems are not specified.

A lace-bordered valentine consisting of one stanza, ten lines. The opening lines of the valentine seem to be taken from a valentine poem written by T. Tessier and included in "The Bower of Love or the Compleat Valentine Writer," 1830. Titled, "To Miss Annie Young Feby 14th, 1848." Signed "Columbia, Valentine." Note: Thomas Welsh and Annie Young were married on October 24, 1850.

Handwritten draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to James Buchanan or to William L. Marcy requesting instructions on how to proceed following his appointment as 2nd Lieutenant; the same draft document also contains remarks (prepared for some meeting) advocating a vigorous prosecution of the war; the document ends with a poem evidently written by Welsh summarizing his feelings about going back into war, a wounded veteran ready for further sacrifice to secure an honorable and lasting peace.

Miscellaneous notes and sketches written by Thomas Welsh, including: 1) A sketch about the amount of money the public had to pay for Queen Victoria's wedding, evidently copied from the Philadelphia Ledger. 2) A notice of the death of General Thomas Sumpter [Sumter] of South Carolina, evidently copied from the Philadelphia Ledger, June 23, 1840. 3) A note about the population of Lowell, Mass. being top heavy in favor of females, evidently from the Times, Philadelphia. 4) A note about the suicide death (by starvation) of John Jordan, from the Columbia Spy. 5) A mock newspaper article about Thomas Welsh leaving Columbia August 29, 1843 for Baltimore and Washington.
