Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane stating that he opened her letter from Mrs. Kennedy and read the part dealing with John Lane’s estate; hoping that Mr. Riddle visits Lancaster when she is there; saying that a case has been argued in Harrisburg with no decision yet; expressing sorrow at the illness of James Henry’s wife; reporting that Bob Nevin visited last night and that he had his hand on General Whipple’s shoulder when he was mortally wounded and is taking the body to New Hampshire; expressing disappointment that no welcoming was planned for the 122nd Regiment; hoping the political parties may not “have a collision,” and having no further information about the Lanes except that Dick’s house is not yet finished. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane giving details of Miss Lane’s coming wedding and the house Dick has bought in Philadelphia, asking if she has been invited, reporting that Dr. James Lane lost nearly all of his movable property during a raid by the rebels, and that the Misses Lane and Jenkins are departing for Philadelphia today. This group of sixteen letters of unknown ownership and whereabouts were copied on 19 July 1937 by F. A. Henry, American Consulate, Melbourne, Australia. Whether he owned the letters is not clear.

Letter to H. B. Swarr from E. J. Lee stating that he is legally the president of the Virginia and Maryland Bridge Company; noting that during the war Mr. David Billmyer, a director, managed what was left of the Company and has been attempting to purchase additional shares; and suggesting that Mr. Swarr enquire of Mr. Billmyer about dividends due to Mr. Lane’s estate and asking that he inform Mr. Lee of the answer. A letter from J. Ridenour, Jr. to James Buchanan. Ridenour explains how glad he was to hear Buchanan’s opinions on the war while he was visiting him at Wheatland. After leaving Wheatland, Ridenour spoke with Mr. Hamilton in Lancaster, who told him about Buchanan’s differing views on the war and the Confederacy. J. Ridenour, Jr. asks James Buchanan to confirm his notes on their conversation at Wheatland, that Buchanan did not agree with the Confederacy and would never have signed a compromise had he been President during the war, and that Mr. Hamilton was wrong. Letter from Thomas Welsh to Lillie Welsh (daughter)
Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to daughter, Lillie Welsh. From James Island, South Carolina. Letter thanks Lillie for writing, tells Lillie how much he misses her and her siblings and intends "to hurry home as soon as this war is over." Encloses money to take Effie for ice cream. Note: James Island is located near Charleston.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
