Title: Draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to General Orlando B. Willcox

Description: Draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to General Orlando B. Willcox. From Hustonville, Kentucky. Deals with disciplinary matters in the 27th Michigan Regiment, including the Chaplain who wrote a plaintive letter to the Detroit Advertiser & Tribune that was also evidently disrespectful to his superior officers. Welsh arrested the Chaplain, but recommends against dismissing him from service. In another matter involving charges brought by the late Lt. Col. Sprague of the 27th against Col. Fox of the 27th, Welsh declines to convene a Court Martial, recommending that for procedural reasons it be handled at the Department or Division level instead.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: Letter from George Hicks to General Thomas Welsh

Description: Handwritten letter from George Hicks to Brig. General Welsh. From Columbia, Kentucky. Letter is a reply to a dispatch received by George Hicks on behalf of Thomas Welsh who was away at Jamestown, Kentucky. Hicks answers the dispatch by explaining the reasons of Welsh's transfer of Colonel Leasure to the command of the first brigade. Hicks also states that Colonel Bowman is in temporary command of General Welsh's brigade.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: Henry Seiger's Civil War Letters

Description: This collection contains four letters from Henry Seiger to Anna Roland in Marietta, Pennsylvania and one letter in German that was either to or from Anna Roland. Henry Seiger was in the 12th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment, which was also known as the 41st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He served in Company D, the Kepner Fencibles, under the command of Captain Samuel Wilt. Folder 1 contains the transcriptions, Folder 2 contains the original letters.

Admin/Biographical History: A writ of habeas corpus is a procedure for obtaining a judicial determination of the legality of an individual's custody. This collection includes petitions for writs of habeas corpus and the writs themselves, showing the names of petitioners, persons to be brought to court, nature of dispute or alleged crime, dates of writs and accompanying documents, names of judges, and names of persons that the writs are filed against. Petitioners include indentured servants, Freedom Seekers, free persons of color, convicted prisoners, those awaiting trial, relatives of prisoners, parties in child custody disputes, and relatives of army recruits and draftees.

Description: Letter from R. C. Long in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to his father, Moses Clark, regarding news of the Confederate Army in Harrisburg. He has heard that Abe Long wishes to be exempt from the draft and gives his opinion of Copperheads, support for the Union, and friends and cousins who are not serving. "It makes me feel bad to think that I am the only one of our kind that is in the service when I have so many Cousins and relatives at home that are just as able to go as I was." With transcription.

Admin/Biographical History: Reuben Clark Long enlisted 30 September 1861 and served as a private with the 79th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company E until his death at Chickamauga, Georgia on 19 September 1863.
