Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester chatting about a letter from Lily’s Aunt Lathrop, the marriage of Miss Hayes and Bowman, the death of Uncle Edward’s child, Lily’s friend Samuel, Mary McKennan, Miss Muhlenberg of Reading, a coming trip through several cities of Pennsylvania and perhaps Virginia Springs with Uncle, Mr. Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Macey at Wheatland, Mr. Longenecker in North Carolina to visit a gold mine, an exhibition in Lititz to be attended by “all of us” spearheaded by Eskridge, Miss Dow, the “romance” of Miss Hetty and Mr. Bear, Mr. Hamilton (ex-minister to Denmark), and the annoyance and noise of the boys. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson wondering why her last letter had a sad ring to it; does not want to return to the “hateful climate of Washington”; is happy that her sister Emily is coming to Lake George as part of her wedding trip but is sad he will not be there show her its beauty; the family Thieriot is prepared to love her when they meet her; gives his travel itinerary, stopping in New York to see Mr. Scharff and attend to business, stopping to see Edward Young Buchanan, whose family nursed him back to health when he was sick, and finally arriving in Annapolis for the weekend; tried to paint her a picture of Lake George, but has not painted recently. Lane (Harriet Lane’s brother) in Lancaster where all are kind, but he doesn’t like Lancaster and longs to be in New York; has plans to see both her mother and her soon; needs to be in New York on March 4 to be admitted to the bar.
