Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston regretting that the weather and his age prevents him from visiting her; expressing shock at the death of Robert Magraw; expressing his joy that Judge Black and wife, Judge Fisher and wife, and Horatio King have visited on the judges’ way to Wilkes-Barre where the state supreme court will hear an important railroad case; expressing happiness the young ones” and Miss Hetty are friends; expressing joy that Thomas, after a “rampage” of eight days has returned but would be happier if he had only the services of Rosana, his wife; expressing disappointment that Mrs. Lane nor her sons have visited; expressing joy that Blanche Nevin has recovered from her illness; and saying he is very glad that he and James Henry have settled their affair, though he thinks that their friend Mr. Schell could have been more help to James in his business; and expressing elation that James has done quite well except for his “Quick Silver speculation.” With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. advising her to send all correspondence about her cousin’s, Dr. Lane’s, estate to him as a precautionary manner; recalling his pleasant dining evening with the Hiesters even though she wore a “long thick cloth Frock on the hottest day of the Season”; saying that Miss Hetty suggested inviting James Henry and his wife to visit; and stating that the case of Mr. Lane’s estate has not been decided. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane enclosing $100 at her request and two letters, one of which he opened to learn of James Henry and his wife, and expressing disappointment with the engraving. He learned that Governor Hutchinson wrote letters to a private secretary before he became governor, not to the Home Secretary while governor. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing his pleasure that she is leaving Washington soon for Baltimore to meet Mr. Johnston’s family, regretting she has not seen Maria Weaver, relating that Miss Hetty is well again but getting old, Thomas is staying at the insistence of Father Keenan, Miss Annie is most agreeable, asking her opinion of Mr. Phillips, and praising Lily and Mr. Berghmans while complaining of indigestion. Envelope addressed care of Mr. Berghmans of the Belgian Legation.

Description
Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing sorrow that she and her husband have contracted bad colds; chastising her for wishing she had a double house, advising her to “Be content with your lot” and she has “abundant reason to be so”; advising against inserting Mr. Schell’s “likeness” into the locket; the domestic Ellen’s illness has affected her mind and made Thomas “miserable and disconsolate”; George is leaving and “another colored man will take his place”; Buchanan will not go to New York because he feels unwell and cannot leave until “the girls” do, commenting that they are now sleighing with Octavius and Miss Griffith; willing to sell a house to Mrs. James Norris for $15,000 but Mrs. Lane could have it for $13,000; regretting he has not heard from the Nevins lately; gleefully announcing that Miss Annie will launch into the “Apostolic succession when Dr. Spark’s book arrives”; complaining that Mr. Capen writes far too many letters and that he answers only a few of them; advising Mr. Johnston to go ahead with his own book because Buchanan is too old to be any use; and giving his love to Emily and Bessy. With envelope addressed to 79 Monument Street, Baltimore.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing happiness that they are in their new home; confessing that he kept her letter from New York a secret to prevent her being perceived as a “restless gadabout”; regretting the leaving of Miss Magaw even though she left Jessie behind; stating that she will visit Miss Ramsay, daughter of the general; expressing his pleasure that the Misses Pleasonton are currently visiting; expressing pleasure that the new servants are “quite satisfactory”; noting that he will learn little of the party that the Misses Nauman gave because Misses Blanche and Patty did not attend; stating that his visit to Mrs. Lane was very gracious and that the boys are beginning to write compositions, which he has offered to correct though he suspects they will not bring them to him; noting that the Brintons leave for New York and Boston before going to Europe; giving Mr. Johnston his assessment of John P. Reed of Bedford, F. M. Kimmell of Chambersburg, and Mr. Webb; and commenting on the fee for a report on the lands to be divided among the six people involved. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston commenting on the funeral of Miss Yeates and the lack of the old families in attendance, but led by the Cunninghams; commenting on Catharine’s will of a number of years ago and that her sister, Mrs. Cunningham, “bore the life of her sister with Christian resignation”; lamenting the last escapade of Thomas, who is back after quitting and getting his pocket picked of his earnings but that his wife Rosanna is an excellent cook; noting the “three young ones” give much pleasure to Miss Hetty; saying that Jessie, at the age of seventeen looks more like twenty, has good manners, an amenable disposition, “quite good looking,” leaning toward corpulence, will visit General Ramsay’s family in Washington, whose daughter is a good friend; noting that Blanche Nevin is unwell; complaining about the lack of communication from Mr. Schell, but James Henry might have some information; complimenting her on her housekeeping and asking her to cultivate the female members of the Johnston family; looking forward to another visit to “the Palace” but wants only “common fare”; and noting that Mrs. Steinman and sister visited a few days ago.
